Falling in love is easy.Falling out of love is the hardest thing in the world.

And Elin and Ty Whitt are terrible at it.

The first time the local basketball star smiled at Elin, she was a goner. It was just so damn easy to fall for the dark-haired hometown hero with his charming smile and strong, athletic build.

Thousands of sleepy smiles, aimless drives down country roads, and squeaks of the backdoor after a swing shift later, reality hits. And it hits hard. Falling in love was definitely the easy part. Watching it break apart was impossible.

Through the tears, the second-guesses, the memories of a life built together, the world keeps spinning. With each turn comes clarity and hope—sometimes in the form of a pair of muddy boots by the back door or from the words of a wise friend.

When Ty shows back up with a new found determination to put his family back together, Elin’s torn between the fights of the past and the possibility of a new start. This is the man that holds her heart, the man she loves beyond anything else. But this is also the one person in the world that can cause her the most pain.

Life’s not always easy. Love’s not for the faint of heart. But with life comes lessons and Ty and Elin have the scars to prove it. But it’s their love written in those scars that will hold them together … or break them apart.

The Last Ten Pounds

One Woman’s Journey to Love

(by shedding Fear, Anger, Hatred…and Everything In-Between)

by Lina Sage

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Memoir
mediakit_bookcover_thelast10pounds
BLURB:
Shortly after I was born, my family left Vietnam’s strict Communist regime by escaping on a tiny fishing boat in the middle of the night.
Luckily, Canada accepted us as refugees and we were excited for a new beginning. However, any hopes of a brighter future vanished before an abusive alcoholic father who’s repeated physical violence against my mom left me screaming for any stability. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse clouded my childhood years leaving me so damaged that it changed who I was meant to grow up to be.
In my early twenties, I bought a house and converted it into a full blown marijuana grow op.
Soon after, I entered into the world of elite call girls and became one of the most sought after girls in my agency. By my late twenties, I was on top of the world and the proud owner of a multi-million-dollar luxury day spa.
Just when I thought I had it all, I made the ultimate mistake that ended in me losing everything and hitting rock bottom.
I was spiritually broken and in desperate need of healing. I had no choice but to reconcile with my past. This decision brought me down a miraculous journey that opened me up to consciousness and enabled me to exist in the space I do today; that of uninhibited peace.
The Last 10 Pounds: One Woman’s Journey to Love (by shedding Fear, Anger, Hatred…and Everything In-Between) is my personal journey and a testament that it is possible to heal and transform. To be the person you were born to be.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

The frigid temperature and howling wind chill outside paralleled how I felt inside and I questioned how I even got here in the first place. Sure it was the considerable debt that made me feel like I had been thrust into a desperate corner but unknowingly it was so much more than that. The desperation came with the energy of wanting to release all the excruciating pain and anguish that had been building inside me my entire life. Instead of stopping to take a real look at myself, I opted to believe that the world was going to somehow release my pain. That the world was the very reason why I was so shattered. And the world would make amends and heal my wounds. Feeling empty inside impairs your ability to find any self-worth. So when it comes down to selling your body for money, it seemed hasty once the nerves settled.

You’ll be fine. It’s just a job. The oldest job in the world.

I walked up to the unassuming two story grey building that was located on a busy street. I had driven by this building plenty of times and had no idea what businesses it housed. There were no exterior signs nor were there numbers assigned to any of the offices. The only instructions I had was to walk up to the second floor and once at the top of the stairs to turn right and the office was the door to the right. I inhaled a deep breath and knocked gently on the door.

GUEST POST

Lina Sage: What inspires me the most?

Kindness inspires we the most. I would like to share one of my blog posts from my spiritual blog, Chic Sage (www.chicsage.com) called The Power of Kindness:

To be obscenely rude is to be unkind. Master the art of kindness and all aspects of your life will flourish. In kindness is where you’ll blossom. Service to other’s is the only way to achieve enlightenment. Filter away all the noise and the nonsense. Sit quietly and reflect. Find out how you can be of service to the world.

Be grateful for all that you have. Gratitude is the key for continued grace in your life. There is no grace if you can’t even begin to be thankful for your abundance. Sit in solitude and reflect what it is that you are grateful for. This will only take seconds. You can then go about your day and as each hour unfolds, you’ll see how grace presents itself.

Grace is a powerful thing. It is the presence of God in all things you do. If you don’t believe in the divine than your life will continue to challenge itself in multiple proportions. Belief in God is not organized religion. Replace the word God with energy, frequency, vibration, universe, or eternal. God is merely a word that the establishment uses to make us feel subordinate. This is not truth for we are one and the same. We are an extension of God. An extension cannot be lower than the original source. Rather it is a continuation of the source but with greater improvement.

BLURB:

Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me.

For eighteen-year-old Lacey, life at home is a rollercoaster. She doesn’t think she’ll ever be good enough to truly deserve Mama’s love.

But when Lacey enters college and meets Walker, everything starts to change. Suddenly, Lacey is face to face with the realization that maybe what she’s always seen as normal really isn’t. Her entire life—and everything she’s ever believed about herself and her family—is abruptly hanging in midair.

Lacey is left facing two paths, and she has to make a choice. The first means walking away from everything she’s ever known. The other means never really knowing the truth.

The Truth She Knew offers an honest and powerful glimpse into mental illness, the meaning of true love, and the psychological waltz that a daughter dances as she endures her mother’s unpredictable emotions, manipulation, and abuse.

EXCERPT:

Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me. She reminded me of this on a consistent basis, and as hard as I tried, I couldn’t change her mind. Finally, I had to make a choice: her or me.

My heels clicked against the cold tile floor of the hospital and my heart fluttered as I searched the room numbers.

I rubbed my clammy hands against my jeans as I saw the ladies’ restroom and hurried toward it. I needed a minute before I reached her room. I pushed the door open and scanned the bathroom for anyone else. It was empty.

My purse landed with a thud on the bathroom counter. I turned the cold water on, splashed it on my cheeks, and wiped my face with a paper towel.

“Breathe,” I muttered. “She can’t hurt you anymore. You’re grown.”

My pep talk wasn’t working. Fear was gnawing at my stomach.

I reached into my bag, grabbed my powder compact, and touched up my makeup. My green eyes shone brighter against the redness left from my tears. I ran a brush through my long, blond hair and dabbed a hint of gloss on my lips, more out of habit than need.

“Let’s do this, Lacey. Suck it up,” I said to my reflection. I released a slow, deep breath and headed out of the restroom and down the hall toward the ICU.

BLURB:

Welcome to Soulless.

We are the generation that laughs at death.

Reincarnation; what was once considered a gift of immortality has become an eternity of nightmares.

Nadia Richards lives in a world plagued by reincarnation, a system of recycling souls where all past memories, personalities and traumatic events are relived daily in disjointed sequences. Trapped within their own warped realities, not even the richest and most powerful are saved from their own minds unraveling. Madness is the new human nature, and civilizations are crumpling beneath themselves trying to outrun it.

Within a society that ignores death, Nadia appears to be the one exception to the reincarnation trap. Born without any reincarnated memories and with printless eyes, the hot tempered 19 year old quickly becomes the ultimate prize to all those wishing to end the vicious cycle, or for some, to ensure they could evade death forever.

Excerpt:

His top lip curled, as it always did in his half smile. “I can’t stop thinking about it.”

“About what?”

In his hands, he fiddled with the hunting knife. “You.” He twisted the blade and flicked out, clearing the dirt under his nails. “You were going to leave me. You said it was better this way, for the both of us.” The rasp of his accusing voice felt like a guillotine above my neck.

I uncomfortably shuffled back but didn’t speak.

“You were right. Your life without me would be better. Easier. Safer.” Every word strained from his lips as though he was pushing air from the pit of his stomach. My eyes widened and my heart picked up speed. Diesel lightly shook his head. “But this isn’t about making things easier. You’re with me now and you won’t leave no matter how hard it gets.”

“That’s not for you to decide,” I said with a cringe.

“Because if you leave me—”

With an anguished sign, I turned my head away. “Let me guess, you’ll always find me? And if I try to run you will break my legs and chop off my fingers and remove my eyes-”

“No. If you leave me, I will vanish… and I don’t want to vanish, Nadia.”

Surprised, my jaw went slack. Without even blinking, Diesel stilled his fumbling and tightened his stare, looking at me in a way I felt penetrated to my very core.

“You don’t know what it’s like living in this hell. I’m drowning under black water and I can never surface. You remember what it feels like to have your body shut down only to wake up not knowing which reality is real. It would’ve been easier to fade into a drifter, to stop the fight all together and just crumple into the purest of insanities. In my darkest moments I almost allowed it to happen, but then I met you. The girl with no reincarnated memories. The one without a soul imprint. It’s you, and only you, who can save me. But then you came into my room with that story about how everything would be better if we were separated. You left me tied to a bed, and for hours I thought I had lost you. Do you know how that feels? To have everything you’ve ever wanted just walk out? I came to realise just how dangerous you are to me. Just how easily you can break me in half. That’s why I can’t let you leave.”

Excerpt:

Beads of sweat broke out along my hairline. I wiped them away, tightened my ponytail, and ran faster along the dirt trail, jumping over exposed roots and ducking under low-hanging branches. Pine trees, firs, and alders turned my path into more of an obstacle course than a trail.

A twig snapped behind me.

I glanced back, but didn’t see anything. Probably just a raccoon.

My sneaker hit a root and my arms flew in front of me. I landed on my hands and knees, and slid down an incline. Rocks and branches dug into my skin until I crashed into a huckleberry bush.

I stood and dusted myself off. Blood dripped from my legs. I pulled twigs, dirt, and small rocks from the cuts.

“Nice work, Victoria,” I muttered to myself.

Sasha had said I shouldn’t have gone into the forest for my first jog. But having just moved to the beautiful Olympic Peninsula, I wasn’t about to join a club when I had the great outdoors. Birds chirped all around and a stream bubbled nearby. It was like the woods were telling me I’d made the right choice.

Another snap.

“Who’s there?” I sounded a lot braver than I felt. My heart thundered against my ribcage and I whipped my head around. My roommates had said the woods were safe, but I was also trusting people who had been strangers only a couple days earlier.

Why had I gone into the woods alone? Wasn’t that how half of all horror movies started?

I thought of Sasha running on a treadmill, flirting with cute college guys. Maybe she was the smart one.

Footsteps.

“Hello?” I called.

Nothing. The birds had even stopped singing.

“Is anyone there?”

The footsteps came closer.

My pulse drummed in my ears. I fought to breathe normally.

A small gray and black wolf stepped out from behind the tree. He made eye contact with me.

I didn’t move a muscle, holding its gaze.

BLURB:

The last thing Kaylee wants to do is participate in a childish scavenger hunt—especially inside the abandoned retirement home on the edge of town. When she finds a bruised, deaf boy hiding inside one of the rooms, she vows to lead him to safety . . . only to discover the front doors are now padlocked, and her friends are nowhere to be found. Kaylee is about to learn that not everything that goes ‘bump in the night’ is imaginary, and sometimes there are worse things to fear than ghosts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Listen.
That’s my father’s favorite word. I’m pretty sure that’s why he left my mother and me: we never listened. What does he expect? My mother hides behind a computer sixty hours a week, and I’m only fifteen. It’s not in our nature to listen. Case in point: I think my mother just asked a question I didn’t catch—which is bad—because she hates repeating herself almost as much as I do. My best defense is to keep staring out the car window, pretending I didn’t hear.
“Well?” she asked.
“Yeah,” I said, “I get it. You hate me.”
“Kaylee, I don’t hate you. And we both know you brought this on yourself.”
“Me? How is this my fault? I haven’t done anything—”
“Exactly. It’s been three weeks since we moved here, and in that time you’ve made zero effort to make friends or leave the apartment. If it wasn’t for Anna, you wouldn’t do anything but come home from school and sulk in your room.”
I slunk down further in the passenger seat. “Yeah, and if it wasn’t for Anna I wouldn’t even be here right now.”
“Well, I think it was very generous of these girls to invite you over tonight, so at least try and make an effort. It’s only for a few hours.”
I scowled out my window, knowing it was pointless to argue. Once my mother made up her mind it took an act of God, or an argument with my father, to change it.
Review by BeachBoundBooks
Pickled Pumpkin Pie is a charming picture book, told in delightful rhyme, and filled with colorful and fun illustrations.
It’s Thanksgiving and Uncle Pete can’t wait to eat, but it’s not turkey, potatoes, or cranberries he’s after. Uncle Pete is waiting for dessert and not just any dessert. He wants pickled pumpkin pie. As the scrumptious meal comes to an end Uncle Pete’s excitement builds. Will he finally get his Thanksgiving wish?
Pickled Pumpkin Pie is well written, engaging, and highly entertaining. The book also contains several activities and of course gives readers a chance to create their own pickled pumpkin pie. This is certain to become a fast holiday favorite among children and adults.
I recommend picking up a copy.
book blurb
A good man falls seven times,
But I’m far from a good man.
I’ve got my own set of rules,
And I never stray from them.
I live by a simple set of guidelines and they’re easy to follow.
But when Chelsea Robinson walked into my garage,
The rules went out the door.
Suddenly, I was falling.
No, that’s not right.
It was more like a crash-landing,
Because I sure as hell couldn’t stop myself.
And now, I’m still falling,
Uncontrollably.
For a woman I shouldn’t even want.
But when love steps in, you have no option but to break your own rules.
excerpt
“Knock knock.”
“Who’s there?”
“Anita,” Chelsea says, looking like the Cheshire Cat.
Her low, satin-like voice is doing all kinds of things to my cock. I barely respond with, “Anita who?”Maybe I can cool down with a sip of water. My hand finds one of the bottled waters I’d pulled out from the refrigerator earlier.
“Anita dick inside me!” she says, cracking up.
Water comes flying from between my lips. Chelsea is beside me, cackling, and I’m choking. Did she just say she needs a dick inside her? I can’t catch my breath. I think about my next move. How much can I say?Fuck it. Might as well be upfront. Once I collect myself and put the bottle down, I catch and hold Chelsea’s gaze. “How about mine?”
“What?” she whispers, leaning away from me in a hurry.
I move closer to her as I’ve longed to do since we sat down. I have to touch her, and I settle on fingering a few of her long curls, twirling them around. I’m trying to collect myself and not come off as a desperate fool. I take in a few deep breaths to help me regain some of my composure. “I know where I’d like this to end, Chelsea.”
Her tongue slips through her lips and moistens them. I move closer to her, breathing her in, and I do believe I could actually come right now. Mutual desire saturates the air as our eyes connect and our bodies lean in at the same time. Unable to decide where to touch again, my hands drop to her thighs, where her skirt is hiked up.
Counting helps to calm me down. “I’ve been dying to see what’s under this thing since I saw you at the garage.” My hand slides up from her bare flesh to the edge of her skirt.
She hesitates, even though her mouth opens.
“Come on; you can tell me,” I prompt.
“I’ve wanted to see more of this for the last two weeks.” Her hand travels up my arm then grips it.
That’s all I needed to hear. I drag her over my lap so she’s straddling me. Her skirt rides up even more. All of her is exposed: gorgeous thighs and her more-than-handfuls ass cheeks. My hands get greedy, palming the body part—one of many—that has driven me wild since seeing her in those denim cut-offs. My finger trails down the thin strip of material that’s between her ass.
“Mmm,” she hums.
“Chels, you have to tell me to stop.” I give her an out, just in case she needs one. But she rubs her barely-covered pussy on me, and I take that as her answer.
“I don’t want you to stop.”
Joel Anderson doesn’t take anything seriously.Not his relationships, which have been few and far between since his brutal divorce. Not the drama of working in a tattoo parlor, which seems to be around every corner. When things get him down, he smiles and cracks a joke. But he’s not the kind of man you cross, or you’ll find yourself at the wrong end of his fists.Annika Belousov takes everything seriously.Like her job as a reality television producer, given that she typically has something to prove. Or her love life, which is defined by a series of requirements — affluent, ambitious, accomplished, to name a few. Definitely her family, who worked their whole lives to afford her every opportunity, a sacrifice she doesn’t take lightly. When she’s tapped to produce a reality show at Joel’s shop, she doesn’t think twice, just goes in for the kill, as if there were any other way.
The second Annika walks into Joel’s shop, he makes it his mission to crack her open, but she’s not having it. He’s all wrong — too crass, too hairy, too un-serious. But it doesn’t take her long to find out there’s more to him than smirks and tattoos. And what she finds could put her career and his heart on the line.
Not that Joel cares. Because for the first time in a long time, he’s found his tonic.
In his will, he has left her his medical practice and Georgian-style mansion, and it is up to her to hire a new doctor and settle his estate. Fresh out of medical school, Lexi is happily settled in Chicago, doing research in tandem with her boyfriend. Brian, fifteen years older with impressive credentials and sophisticated tastes, has no interest in visiting her birthplace of Glenmore, Illinois. Lexi soon discovers that home has its attractions, the first being the handsome contractor Joe Manning, her secret crush in high school. Seeing patients is also surprisingly satisfying. When Joe offers to remodel her father’s den, Lexi jumps at the chance to erase sad memories and become better acquainted with her gorgeous handyman. Even as the charms of Glenmore draw her in, a series of break-ins at her father’s house make her fear for her safety. Is the intruder searching for something other than valuables? And how determined is the culprit? Lexi finds her fragile happiness at risk, including her newfound love for Joe Manning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Joe closed his eyes for a moment. “You were wearing these tight black jeans with high-heeled boots.” He opened his eyes. “And this slinky sleeveless top that was all shiny and sparkly.”

Lexi gasped and covered her mouth with her hand.

“And your blonde hair was all long and sexy and sleek, and you had some glittery stuff in it.”

Lexi flattened her palm on his chest. “Oh my God. You do remember.”

“Of course I do. I sorta had a crush on you too.”

Her breath caught as Joe’s eyes flashed. His chest was warm and firm beneath her palm. “No way.”

Joe leaned in and whispered, “Way.”

Lexi was mesmerized by his lips as they moved in on hers, feeling helpless to stop him. Not really wanting to stop him. He kissed her softly, his lips burning hot. She melted under them as he cupped the back of her head and stroked his tongue inside her mouth. Lexi moaned with need, her body tingling, surprised at her reaction. The last time she’d been instantly aroused by a kiss was … never.

Stroking her fingers up his chest, she wrapped her arm around his neck and kissed him back. Their tongues tangled as they moved closer together. Her skin was hot and tight where Joe clutched her hip. What is going on with me? This never happened when she was with Brian. Oh, God! Brian!

Lexi tore her lips away from Joe’s. She moved her hand back to his chest, this time to gently push him away. “Joe, I can’t—”

“It’s okay. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

Lexi met his gaze, her heart pounding. “No, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have kissed you back. It’s just that … I’m seeing someone.”

An high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay’s the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.
She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.
Lindsay’s goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she’s done her job.

Lindsay’s hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Book Description

 Stone Faces is the story of a ten-year-old girl named Alice who notices one day that her parents’ faces have turned to stone. Soon afterward, they tell her they are going to get divorced and, in reaction, she allows her own face to turn to stone because she doesn’t want anyone to know how much this hurts her. It is easier to deal with her friends when her stone face is in place, but she also begins to find herself alone more and more.

While on her summer vacation at her aunt’s house on Cape Cod, she sees a stone on the beach in the shape of a laughing man’s face (called Mr. Happy Man). She soon discovers that this stone can talk and that it has friends among the other beach stones, who play games in the sand when people aren’t around.

Together with Mr. Happy Man and his friends, Alice develops an ingenious scheme to help her parents resolve their differences. Their plans are thrown awry when a woman finds Mr. Happy Man in the sand and walks off with him. Alice decides to rescue the stone and sneaks into the woman’s house where she learns that the woman is actually a witch.

Read an Excerpt

Hi. My name is Alice, and this is the story of the worst summer of my entire life.

The trouble actually started way before the summer. In fact, it was early spring when my parents and I took that long walk in Central Park. We all should have been in a really great mood because (finally!) the sun was out and it was nice and warm. But I remember glancing over at my mom and dad again and again as we walked, thinking that both of their faces had changed. It’s tough to describe. Their features had gotten sort of hard. They looked a lot like the carved stone faces on some of the buildings in our neighborhood.

Anyway, I pretended that nothing was wrong and forgot about it until it was time to start planning our summer vacation.

Here’s the thing—I love going to the seashore more than almost anything in the whole world. Every summer for as long as I can remember, my mom and my dad packed up our car with all our beach stuff (and snacks for the long ride). Then, we drove the five and a half hours from New York City to visit my aunt in a place called Provincetown on the very tip of Cape Cod.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love New York City. My mom and I can take the bus to my dance classes, and a subway to where I belong to a kids’ theater group on Saturdays. We can walk to my school, to the field house where my soccer team plays, and to the gym where my dad and I shoot hoops. So, yeah, I love New York City.

There’s just one problem. Until I’m older, I pretty much have to stay glued to an adult’s side whenever I leave our apartment. When I’m twelve, my mom says I can take the bus by myself to certain places. When I’m thirteen, I’ll be able to go on the subway. Depending. Depending on what, you might ask. Just depending my mom says back. Gag! I hate the word depending.

Anyway, here’s the point—in Provincetown I’m free. I can take walks by myself all over town. The only catch is that I have to stay within a block of Commercial Street, which is like the Broadway of Provincetown. It is usually so crowded that people can’t even fit on the sidewalks and so they walk in the street. It’s like a big pedestrian mall.

And best of all, I can go out to the bay beach by myself and swim, so long as there’s a lifeguard on duty. I love to be tossed by the waves and paddle through the swells in the deep water. I love to make sand castles and look for shells and stones and beach glass and driftwood. The beach is pretty much my idea of paradise.

So, maybe you can understand why I was really upset in early June when my mom and dad sat me down in our living room late one afternoon for a talk. It was getting dark outside. Thunderstorms were predicted, and the sky was almost black. I sat on the sofa by myself. They were each in their own chair across from me, and they were each trying to smile. But it was no use with those stone faces of theirs. I was so nervous I almost couldn’t hear what my mother was saying.

Excerpt

Chapter 4

You Drive Me Wild

The Christmas and New Year’s holiday had passed, and the production was winding down. No more Playbills were being printed, and we had four more performances left. It was the second week of January, and the last few performances, the cast have found ways to piss each other off. Crying jags brought on by a tightly wound theater director became more excessive. I called the last week the “showgirl shutdown” phase, and we were in it.

I arrived to rehearsal at my usual time, and Lex was talking to someone when he motioned me over to join him. Lex introduced me to his good friend Stan Altman, the touring manager for a band called Tin Garden.

“Hello,” I said as I extended my hand.

Lex introduced me as his prized pupil, with an incredible range. Stan was looking me over, and I was feeling uncomfortable as he did, which prompted me to tell Lex I needed to get ready for rehearsal. Lex stopped me with an awkward laugh and said rehearsal had been called off for the day, but he wanted me to talk to Stan, who happened to be looking for a new backup singer for his band. I was flattered but told them I wasn’t a Tin Garden fan. Stan was jubilant with that welcome news and stated that was actually perfect for what the band is looking for. Fans they had; a backup singer with a wide range for their lead singer was proving difficult to locate at the ninth hour with a tour starting.

I had been encouraged by Stan to audition for the spot that was taking place in a few hours. I looked at Lex, who had a beaming smile as he nodded for me to say yes. Stan told Lex and I that he was bringing the band over in a few hours, but first he had to wrangle them from their beds and kick out some groupies, stating sarcastically that was his favorite part of his job.

After Stan left and standing there perplexed I asked, “Lex how did this happen?”

“Gina, Stan is an old friend, and he came to see the show the other night and asked about you. I told him we’re done after next week you would be able to do the tour,” Lex said, very excited.

He was excited that I could be touring with one of the biggest bands in music and it was the doorway to a lucrative singing career, but he insisted that I needed get myself ready for them. As Stan put it, “Go put on a slutty little number.” Explaining that I didn’t have such an outfit, Lex insisted we would need Carl’s help. Lex was yelling for Carl, who came running from behind the stage. Lex insisted to Carl that he needed all of magic powers, and that included his inner positive gay, knowing that he had to be in there somewhere, and if he could pull him out for a few minutes to help find me some slut clothes and stat.

Carl, with a confused look on his face, was looking me over and stated to Lex that when he saw me he didn’t see slut. I was thinking to myself, Thanks, Carl. Maybe you’re not as evil as I thought you were. Lex, hearing none of it, told Carl to hit every X-rated store by the theater.

Broadway was loaded with sluts-r-us shops, and Lex wanted Carl to find something that said, “I just fucked the entire band,” but to stay away from the hooker reds and to buy anything in black lace, or something tragic like that.

Carl, with his marching orders, Lex’s credit card, and a very pissed-off demeanor, headed out for the forever slutty stores that lined Broadway.

Lex, shaking his head, said, “God knows what he will bring back for you.”

Lex was in a panic to get me ready and wanted the makeup trollop, Gloria, as I typically referred to her, to come out of the gossip session in Hilda’s office and to bring the makeup chest. Gloria, strolling out with her “it’s not eleven-thirty” face on, was informed to make me look like I was either dating or fucking Tin Garden. Gloria, unbeknownst to her, was not given the background story of said comment but did decided to inform me of her sexual desires for the lead singer and things she would do to him given opportunity. (How vivid.)

Lex interrupted her over-imaginative dramatization and said, “Well you may get your wish. They are coming here today.”

Gloria was in a frenzied rush to get my makeup finished upon hearing that exciting news. She told me that she needed to get her own ready-to-fuck face done, mentioning Jesus, dying, and blow-jobs all in the same sentence.

Carl had come back from his shopping excursion and had a look of pride with the outfit he had selected. His picks contained a black pushup bra and a leather miniskirt with a rhinestone skull embedded that was accessorized with rips in the sides to show one’s personal business. If you could actually call this a skirt was stretching it a bit; it looked more like a Halloween cocktail napkin. That was bad enough until he showed us the shoes he had purchased, which were thigh-high pleather boots that only an S&M dominatrix would ever appreciate.

Lex, without hesitation, inquired where the whip was. “Jesus Christ, Carl, I want her looking sexy, not screaming I just came from Paddles.” Lex, looking at the clothes, said, “Fuck it, I didn’t spend my entire life in the theater without having a few tricks to pull out of my ass.”

Carl, giggling, said, “That’s not the only thing you have pulled from your ass.”

Lex took the tragic outfit and said, “Come, Gina dear, and Carl can go fuck himself like he usually does on a Friday night.”

We went to my dressing room, and I took off all of my clothes and was standing there in my bra and panties. Lex took notice of my body and complimented me and asked if I had stopped eating bagels with cream cheese. It was actually stress weight from the play, but thanks for noticing, I thought. Lex took the tragic skirt and had me put it on. No matter which way I stood, it was exposing my personal business. I had no choice; I had to put on some black granny underwear. Looking at myself in the mirror, I looked like a slut ready for some action. Lex took an oversized top and did some draping on me that kind of cleaned up the look and made it doable and less tragic.

After I got into the costume, Lex told Gloria to hang back to wait to meet “whatever the fuck his name is” after I was finished with my audition. Lex had Hilda grab a Tin Garden album for me to study the lyrics printed on the sleeve as I made my way out to the stage. I was reading the lyrics when Lex walked us over to where Stan was waiting.

Stan took me to meet Rick Roland, the guitar player of the band. He was tall, good looking, and had beautiful brown eyes. Rick said, “Hello, Gina, nice to meet you.”

I was reading the album sleeve when Stan walked me over to the lead singer, Sebastian Roland, Rick’s brother and Gloria’s fantasy man. When I looked up and saw him, our eyes locked tight, and I was hit by a thunderbolt that vibrated electricity around the room. I couldn’t take my sight off of his deep, penetrating blue eyes. The only sound I could hear was my own inner voice saying, Holy shit this guy is hot. This man was stunningly beautiful, with shoulder-length dark hair, and had the face of a Greek god.

I heard sound again when he said, “Hey, what’s up?”

Looking down at the floor, I said bashfully, “Hello.”

Sebastian walked over to me and with a soft whisper that tickled close to my ear said, “What are you doing later?” He was looking through me, and it was excitingly uncomfortable not being able to take my eyes off of him.

Stan was clearing his throat when he took me over to the drummer, Marcus Elliott. “Hello, Gina, nice to meet you. Nice boots. I have to get my girlfriend some of those. Tell me later where you got them.”

I was still looking over at Sebastian when Marcus was talking to me. I couldn’t get enough of him. Nervously Lex, who had been standing behind me, interrupted and asked Marcus what size she wore as Marcus was thinking. “Like an eight?”

Lex appeared to be nervous and turned to Carl to go fetch a size eight and pointed toward my feet. Carl gave Lex the, “I’m a personal shopper now” look.

Lex barked, “Don’t start with me today, Carl. Go.”

Stan then walked me over to be introduced to the bass player, Chip Margolis. He was cute, with long, light brown hair, and with a smile Chip said, “Hello, Gina. I saw your show the other night with Stan. Your voice is great. I’m the single guy in the group.”

I thought, Single? No thanks, guy. I’m ready to mingle with your lead singer.

Tin Garden’s crew had finished the band’s setup while we were making chitchat about the tour. Sebastian kept staring at me, and it was hard to keep my eyes off of him. They were all talking, and Sebastian and I continued looking at each other, saying nothing. Then I remembered that he was married to a model I had seen in my magazines, Vail Varland. After I remembered that, I got bummed out and broke my gaze with him.

BLURB:

Sisters in magic, Eolyn and Adiana seek to revive a millennial tradition once forbidden to women. When war strikes, their fledgling community of magas is destroyed; its members killed, captured or scattered.

Determined to defend her people, Eolyn seeks to escape the occupied province and deliver to King Akmael a weapon that might secure their victory. Trapped by the invading army, Adiana is taken prisoner and placed at the mercy of the ruthless Prince Mechnes.

Even as their world is torn asunder, Eolyn and Adiana cling to a common dream. Courage and perseverance guide them toward a future where the Daughters of Aithne will flourish in a world set free from the violence of men.

“War propels the story forward, and the characters are at their best when circumstances are at their worst.” -Publishers Weekly

This is the second book in THE SILVER WEB trilogy. It can be read as a stand-alone novel, or as the sequel to the first book, EOLYN.

EXCERPT:

A hush of wings on the windowsill interrupted Eolyn’s thoughts. She looked up to see a Great River Owl, its proud silhouette outlined by moonlight.

Eolyn rose to her feet in surprise, keenly aware of its penetrating gaze, though she could not see its round eyes in the dark. A breeze ruffled its feathers. Its aura was impossibly familiar: intense shades of gold, burgundy, and forest green, shot through with streaks of deepest indigo.

She held her breath and let it go in a whisper. “Akmael?”

More than a question, it was a hope, a fear, an invocation.

A shimmer passed through the owl, followed by a flash of white light. Suddenly Akmael was with her, the heat of his hand upon her throat, the strength of his fingers intertwining in her hair, the demand of his lips upon hers, warm and full of passion. The magic of the South Woods blew through the window in a humid gust, swirling about them, begging Eolyn to remember who she was and what she once meant to him.

Akmael kissed Eolyn until she had no more breath to give. Then he paused and held her close, their foreheads touching as her fingers traced the familiar prominence of his cheekbone, the line of his jaw, the curve of his full lips.

All she could hear was his desire, carried on the rhythm of his heart. She dared not speak, for if she did, she might stumble upon words of caution or prudence or common sense, and none of that had any place here. Not when he was so near, nearer than he had been in such a painfully long time, closer than he might ever be again.

This is a gift from the Gods, Akmael had once said. To deny it would be an insult to them.

“Eolyn, I—”

She hushed him with a kiss.

Guest post – Character Interview

Love and Magic in the Highlands of Moehn

An exclusive interview with Maga Eolyn and Adiana of Selkynsen

By Medieval Times correspondent Ian McFae

A rough-hewn province, Moehn seems an unlikely setting for one of the kingdom’s most ambitious projects. Yet this is home to Moisehén’s first Aekelahr in generations, where women and girls work together to restore the long-lost magical traditions of Aithne and Caradoc.

The founder of the Aekelahr, Maga Eolyn, survived the purges and is hailed as the last Daughter of Aithne. Her companion, Adiana, is a musician from the province of Selkynsen. We sit together under a warm spring sun, next to the Aekelahr’s dense gardens. From here, I can see several small stone buildings: living quarters and stables, a herbarium and a library. A half-finished wall marks the perimeter of the complex. Given the peace of this place, one can hardly imagine the magas were ever the cause of so much strife.

MT: Thank you both for hosting me today. I’m going to start with a simple question: What is a maga?

Eolyn: A maga is a woman trained in a tradition of magic unique to Moisehén, first discovered in ancient times by Aithne and Caradoc. We seek to understand the natural world, the spirits of plants, animals, and rocks, and to use that understanding for the betterment of our people.

MT: Sounds noble. Yet not too long ago, the kingdom made a concerted effort to burn everyone who had learned this tradition.

Eolyn: When the magas rose up against King Akmael’s father, Kedehen, many people suffered on both sides of the conflict. Today, we are trying to put that past behind us and create a new future in magic, not only for the young women who have joined our Aekelahr, but for all of Moisehén.

MT: Tell me about the women who live here. How do you choose your students?

Eolyn: We accept anyone who comes willingly and demonstrates an aptitude for magic, as well as respect for the traditions and teachings of Aithne and Caradoc. Right now we are a small community: five young girls, Maga Renate, Adiana, and myself. But we hope to grow.

MT: What role do you have, Adiana? Why bring a musician to the Aekelahr?

Adiana: Aithne and Caradoc, who discovered magic, recognized music as a form of Primitive Magic, the most ancient and complex magic given to our people. It’s true I was never trained as a maga, but I know music, and I love teaching the girls. This is the one gift that I can offer in support of Eolyn’s effort.

MT: You left the cosmopolitan city of Selkynsen to settle in this remote and rather backward province. Do you ever miss your home?

Adiana: I miss the wine. There is no better wine than the wine of Selkynsen.

MT: But you don’t regret your choice?

Adiana: Not at all. This is the most wonderful community I’ve ever been a part of. We love each other and care for each other. The girls who study with us will one day be the most powerful women in the kingdom.

MT: It’s common knowledge this Aekelahr would not exist without the generous support of King Akmael. How did you convince the son of Kedehen to permit women to practice magic again, even finance this endeavor?

Eolyn: As children, King Akmael and I were brought together by unusual circumstances. That friendship allowed us to overcome our differences and establish peace in the wake of Kedehen’s reign.

MT: Friendship. A carefully chosen word. Some would call it love.

Adiana: Well he is in love with her. Madly. No doubt about it.

Eolyn: I cannot speak for the King’s heart, but I can assure you there is no romance between us.

MT: Yet there was romance at one time. Would you deny this?

Eolyn: If there was romance between us, it ended before King Akmael married Taesara of Roenfyn. We have not seen each other since.

MT: King Akmael and Queen Taesara are expected to arrive in Moehn soon as part of their summer progress. Any chance of old flames reigniting?

Eolyn: No. Absolutely not.

Adiana: I would say yes. Definitely. Yes.

Eolyn: Adiana, please.

Adiana: I mean, really. Look at her, Ian. What king wouldn’t be in love with this woman? She’s beautiful! And I know she still has feelings for him. You should see how obsessive she’s been with all the preparations. It’s driving the rest of us mad.

Eolyn: Perhaps this would be an appropriate moment to bring the interview to a close.

MT: As much as I’d like to delve deeper into this question, we are, I’m afraid, at the end of our time today.  Thank you both! Readers of Medieval Times, I will be back in one week with full coverage of the King’s long-anticipated visit to the province of Moehn. Until then, this is Ian McFae signing off from the highlands of Moisehén and wishing you a most magical day.

Here’s the problem with myths and legends; they’re fiction. At one time, they may have been stories of real people, but over time, the story was passed from person to person, so what was once fact, becomes the written fables of those long ago.

This is the true story of Death and the five horsemen.
Quitting her teaching career and working full time on her fledgling editing business, Julie Michaels isn’t prepared for the shedload of changes heading her way. To be precise, it’s just one screeching stop on the crazy train away.
Dean “Death” Apocalos never imagined change would come so swiftly in the form of love, chaos, and Decay. Dean and his three brothers are about to see their worst fear come to light; their forgotten brother and the fifth horseman, Decay.
Previously entombed, someone has let the loon loose on LA. It’s now up to the horsemen to put him back in his box… before he upsets the balance once more.

Excerpt:

I think I will enjoy my time here.

Very much.

I’m taking in that magnificent view while I swirl a glass of red wine. Sometimes a girl gets lucky. It’s well past midnight now, but I can’t sleep. Beyond the beauty of my surroundings, of the warmth on my skin this late in the year, is the sound of the sea. I am truly alone in my own little nirvana. No one knows where I am, and I don’t care.

There’s a flash of movement from the corner of my eye. Maybe I’m not as alone as I thought. My heart flutters a little. Then I see him walking the beach towards the water, under the great moon above. My magnificent view just got even more spectacular. He’s fully naked.

My attention is riveted now as I sip my wine. I can’t see a lot of detail in the darkness, but I can see he is tall, with long hair. Nicely built, and if my eyes don’t deceive me, well-endowed as well. Now, this is a very interesting development.

I watch as he enters the water, and I shiver just a little as if my own skin was touched by the cool waters. He disappears momentarily beneath the dark sea, and emerges, throwing back his long hair. I know I should look away, I should respect his privacy, but I cannot. I am a voyeur in my own little world.

I’m not really sure how much time I spend watching him. Perhaps only a few minutes, maybe even an hour. He emerges from the waves, a mere silhouette now in the moonlight. He stops and looks straight to me. My first reaction is to want to drop to the floor. But my mind tells me he cannot see me in the darkness.

So, if he cannot see me, why does he stare in my direction?

A Quick History of the Jack O Lantern

By Natalie-Nicole Bates

I was born on Halloween day. This I suppose is the reason for my love of all things Halloween. My favorite part of the holiday isn’t the trick or treating or the fancy costumes, not even the birthday cake and the Halloween themed birthday gifts.

No, for me it was, and still is the choosing of the perfect pumpkin for carving into the slightly imperfect Jack O Lantern (you must know that I am artistically challenged – so the slightly imperfect remark).

But to understand the (supposed) origins of the Jack O Lantern, we must first briefly discuss the pumpkin. Those beautiful globes of orange goodness whose remnants become pies, cookies, muffins, and seeds. Or wind up on the compost heap.

The name pumpkin dates back to Greek origin. Pepon or large melon. It was translated into Pompon by the French. The English then translated pompon to Pumpion. In The Merry Wives of Windsor, Shakespeare makes mention of Pumpion. Pumpkins are also a large mention in such classics as Cinderella, Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater, and of course, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Native Americans roasted pumpkins on an open fire, and dried strips of pumpkin were woven into mats. The earliest pumpkin pies were baked over hot ashes. The Colonists sliced off the top, removed the seeds, added spices, honey, and milk before baking. A handy baking vessel and treat all in one.

The Jack O Lantern has been around for centuries. The story goes that an Irish fellow by the name of Stingy Jack once invited the devil over for drinks. In true stingy style, Jack didn’t want to pay for the drinks, so he suggested the devil turn himself into a coin, and Jack could pay. The devil did so (how incredibly foolish), and Jack pocketed the coin. He kept the coin in his pocket near a silver cross, thus not allowing the devil to reanimate. Eventually the devil was free, but Jack managed to trick him at least two more times. Each time Jack extracted a promise from the devil not to claim his soul if he should die.

You know nothing good was coming of this.

So Jack died one day, and God told him to hit the road, he wasn’t allowing such a cad into heaven, so Jack paid his friend the devil a visit in hell. Well, the devil, still seething about the multiple tricks perpetrated upon him by Jack, also told him to hit the road, he certainly wasn’t welcome in hell, either. He gave Jack a burning lump of coal and sent him off into the night. Jack carved a hole in a turnip, placed the lump of burning coal inside, and has been using it to light his way ever since. Doomed to roam the earth forever and ever. The Irish referred to this ghostly figure with a lamp as Jack of the Lantern. In time this changed to Jack O’ Lantern.

Frightened by the possibility of Stingy Jack or other malevolent spirits haunting their neighborhoods, folks in Ireland and Scotland began carving scary faces into turnips and potatoes, beets were used in England, and placing them in their windows to scare the spirits away. As immigrants made their way to America, the glorious pumpkin became the go-to fruit for this task.

I hope you enjoyed this brief history of the pumpkin and the Jack O Lantern. Happy Halloween!

To escape their angry words, she finds refuge in an old abandoned house. She always returns home, hoping her mother will love her one day, even though Eden’s not sure what the word love means.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
A gust of wind blew open the back door. Leaves and trash swirled and danced across the floor. I dashed to close it and there, in the faint glow of the rising sun, my mother sat in the swing. “Nora!” I rushed outside and over to her.
She peered at me, her head tilted to one side.
“You okay?”
Instead of answering, she slid off the swing, pushed past me and strode into the house, slamming the door behind her.
I’d been ignored before, but this time, when the door separated us, an actual pain crawled through me. Nora had just walked out of my life. I’d never see her again. I knew it as well as I knew my name. That’s what the vision meant.
“No! Mother! You can’t.” I flew across the yard and pushed against the door: locked. I beat my fists on the rough wood. “Nora, open up. Mom, don’t leave me.”
I pounded on the door until my hands stung. I raced around the corner of the house, hoping to catch her before she got away, and crashed into Toby.
He gripped my shoulders to steady me. “What’s wrong?”
“She, Nora.” The words stuck in my throat.
“Take a deep breath.”
I struggled to pry his hands off me. “Nora locked me out. She’s leaving like my dad.” I broke free and ran.
EXCERPT:
She turned to look at him full on, her eyes like brown velvet. His pulse kicked up a few hundred beats.
“Would you like me to go with you tomorrow? As your trainer?” He held her gaze for a long moment.
She shook her head, her lips moving up in a slight smile. “No. Thanks, but no. This is my problem, and I’m going to deal with it.”
His hand moved to the side of her face, almost without any conscious design on his part. Her skin felt like satin, soft and warm. Velvet eyes, satin skin, a smile like…Ronnie. He didn’t have any metaphors for that. He rubbed his thumb across her upper lip, feeling it pucker slightly beneath his touch.
His cock was straining, heat throbbing in his veins. She’s vulnerable. Don’t take advantage of her, you jerk.
Ronnie stared at him wide-eyed, almost like a child. Defenseless, exposed. Leave her alone.
And then she moved forward swiftly, bringing her hands to the sides of his face, and kissed him.
For a moment he was too astonished to do anything except kiss her back. His brain seemed to be cloaked in a red haze of lust. He drank in her scent, that mixture of Salt Box and the Blarney Stone, sweet willows and malty beer, that added to the aroma of pine sap and ancient wood smoke that seemed to linger around his cabin.
He pulled back slightly, staring into those great brown eyes, the color of cinnamon coffee now. Then he bent his head, running his lips in a line along her throat, to the joining of neck and shoulder.
Guest post
Meg Benjamin: Why I Write What I Write
My books are all contemporary or contemporary paranormal. There are a lot of reasons for this, including my own laziness (historicals require a lot of research), but it’s also because of my own snarkiness. My characters tend to be a little sarcastic and a lot cynical, sort of like me.
That’s not necessarily true of the heroine of Running On Empty. Ronnie’s a sweetheart, but even she can occasionally be annoyed into sarcasm.
“Yeah, you look like you could endure a hell of a lot,” Constance sneered.
This time Misty snickered.
Ronnie raised her chin, but she kept her smile in place. Aunt Dolly had been on the pageant circuit for years—she’d taught Ronnie a lot about dealing with competitive jerks. She widened her smile in Constance’s direction and let her accent slide down south. “Bless your heart, don’t you worry about it. I’m sure you’re doing just fine for your weight.”
I like being able to use contemporary language and attitudes, and I love being able to work popular culture into my stories. The Salt Box Trilogy—Running On Empty is book 3—is all about the clash between reality shows and a Colorado resort town. The townies always win, but part of the fun for me has come in working in reality show rules so that the good guys can either subvert them or comment on them.
Like most romance genres, contemporary romances have conventions, but that’s not such a bad thing. You’re working within some boundaries, but they’re boundaries you recognize. Happy endings don’t bother me, and I love finding ways to make the hero and heroine overcome difficulties that might spell the end for real life couples.
My younger son once suggested our family motto should be “Peace, Love, and Sarcasm.” That’s not a bad description of my romances. Contemporary, snarky, but ultimately all about love.
BLURB:
No man. Bad job. And Murder. Hattie Cooks is still searching for her dream job and one might be available…in the Big Apple, far from friends, family, and Allan Wellborn, the man who still makes her heart race. In the meantime, she finds temporary employment at an accounting firm where two auditor friends turn up dead.
Detective Allan Wellborn dropped Hattie for Blonde Bimbo who, coincidentally, is employed at NLB where fishy things are taking place. When Allan interviews Hattie, he must determine why all signs point to her as a suspect.
Can Hattie discover why Allan dumped her and who is murdering auditors before death strikes again?
EXCERPT:
 “So, you really have no intention of giving me my birthday present?”
“Not really. This one needs to be savored.”
Bouncey, bouncey. “Besides, your mom would kill me if I told.”
Uh-oh. My radar surfaced like a periscope on a Dclass nuclear submarine armed with twenty deadly missiles. This would not do. No siree. Sometimes, Mom’s surprises were incredibly unique. Translated, this meant on occasion her presents were:
—Butt ugly
—Not needed
—Childish
I didn’t want to sound completely ungrateful about Mom’s gifts. In truth, I very much appreciated everything she gave me. I really struggled with keeping the unusual presents and then donating them to a charity when they weren’t used. Most had been stashed on the top shelf of my closet in case she visited and made inquiries about them.
