The Retreat (The After Trilogy, #1)
by Kelly St. Clare
Publication Date: August 30, 2016
Earth is ruined. Humankind destroyed. And it’s old news.
Romy’s life is simple—for a genetically enhanced space soldier; pick up space junk with her four friends, and stave off the invaders fixated on stealing Planet Earth.
It isn’t much. But it’s temporary—only another 850 years to go, give or take.
When her crew tangles with a gulp-worthy alien mothership, Romy’s return to Earth is brought forwards at hurtling pace.
Strength comes from the unlikeliest of quarters.
As does leadership.
…As does betrayal.
Interviewer: Weiv Retni
Weiv Retni: *gulps* U-uh hello, boys. How, uhm…er.
Deimos: Don’t worry, gorgeous, we have that effect on women.
Phobos: And some men.
Weiv Retni: Yes, well, thank you for sitting down to an interview with me. After chatting to Romy I was intrigued.
Phobos: She told you we’re trouble, didn’t she?
Deimos: That we only get out of trouble because we have beguiling green eyes?
Weiv Retni: Something like that. But I gotta say, she referred to you guys as twins. But apart from those…*clears throat* identical and oddly innocent, green eyes, you don’t look alike at all.
Deimos: You take this one, Pho.
Phobos: We’re BFFs. Always have been, always will be. We’re rarely out of each others’ company; whether it’s playing pranks on our space soldier colleagues, making our knot mates, Thrym and Elara, angry, or teasing little Romy. I’m light, he’s …
Phobos nods: Simple as that, sweetheart.
Weiv Retni: Talking of, Romy seems like a sweetheart.
Phobos: Yup. I’d share my chocolate cake with her any day.
Deimos: Nicest gal I know until she gets behind a lazer gun.
Weiv Reti: Yeah. That. Tell me about that.
Deimos: We live in space.
Phobos: ‘bout sums it up.
Weiv Retni: *snorts* That is the understatement of the century.
Phobos: Closely followed by the Romy’s statement you were merely pretty. You’re hot, babe.
Weiv fans her face while Deimos sniggers.
Weiv Retni tries to remember where she was: Ah, y-you. You don’t just live in space though, do you?
Deimos: We pick up space junk
Phobos: Kill the Poachers.
Weiv Retni: And to everyone who doesn’t know what a poacher is?
Phobos: Our human ancestors ruined earth.
Deimos: Global warming, you understand?
Phobos: Turns out an Earth ravaged by global warming was the perfect habitat for our alien buddies.
Deimos: Damn, poacher knobs.
Weiv Renti: *shudders* I’m just glad it’s not me that has to do it.
Phobos: I’ll keep you safe. Best if I stay close though, just in case.
Deimos: And I’ll keep him safe, so he can keep you safe—you know—just in case.
About the Author
When Kelly St Clare is not reading or writing, she is lost in her latest reverie. She can, quite literally, drift past a car accident while in the midst of her day dreams, despite the various police sirens and chaos.
Books have always been magical and mysterious to her. One day she decided to start unravelling this mystery and began writing. Her aim: To write stories she would want to read. As it turns out, this failed miserably. Do you know what it is like to read something you’ve written? Impossible, that’s what. Not to mention, the ending is ruined before you’ve begun. Never-the-less, Kelly loves it and wishes she had more time to squeeze it in between her day job as a physiotherapist.
Fantasy of Frost, the first title in The Tainted Accords, is her debut novel. It’s sequel, Fantasy of Flight released May 2015. Fantasy of Fire is now available!
A New Zealander in origin and in heart, Kelly currently resides in Australia with her soon-to-be husband, a great group of friends, and some huntsman spiders who love to come inside when it rains. Their love is not returned.
