Book blitz & giveaway – Wet by Ashley Bostock

by Ashley Bostock

GENRE:  Contemporary Romance

I’ve always been, Miranda Phillips, the town pariah. Growing up with neglectful parents, having sought attention from all the guys that were willing to give it to me, I wasn’t the most well-behaved kid in Lone Star. Killing an entire pond of Mrs. Potter’s fish when I was sixteen is one of many juvenile delinquent acts I’ve done in my past.

But now I am Lone Star’s reporter, only reporter and I’ve come a long way from being that lost, troubled girl, even if most of the town still judged me for it. I don’t allow anyone to get in the way of what I want. Including Ryan John. So when I corner him in the dark hallway and get him to succumb to the sizzling attraction between us, I know I’m playing with fire.

Even though I’ve successfully avoided her for two months, I haven’t forgotten how she tastes or what she feels like in my arms. And when I get sent a mysterious letter from some company wanting to buy my thousand shares of water rights that have been in my family for over a hundred years, I’m convinced that there is no one…err, better equipped, to help me than Lone Star’s only reporter, Miranda Phillips.

I know how desperately she wants me and this letter gives me all the reason I need to spend one night with the girl from the wrong side of town. One night in exchange for her tight investigative skills. And believe me, she’s tight, in more ways than one. One night. Because Miranda is trouble and being on the city council, as well as guardian to my younger brother and sister, means I can’t afford trouble.

Even if it comes packaged just the way I like.

Yes, I was more attracted to Miranda than any other female I had ever come across, but that didn’t make her girlfriend material. How do I explain all of that to a thirteen-year-old girl? Besides, even though I had a strict no-dating rule for their young ages, I didn’t want to hurt Brianna’s feelings by allowing her to think the boy she was so infatuated with didn’t share her feelings. She was my sister and as cute as she was now, she was going to grow up and become a real heart-breaker. I was fucked.

What in the hell do I do? I lifted my head and asked her to sit down.

“Listen to me, okay? As you can see, Miranda is very beautiful. I’m a guy, I take notice in that because it’s natural so that’s why I look at her that way. Adam probably thinks you’re beautiful too because you are, okay?”

“Okay. But I need to know if he likes me!”

“You’re thirteen, Brianna! It doesn’t matter. Look, I’m sorry. Yes, okay. If he was looking at you the way I was looking at Miranda, then yes, he likes you.”

Somehow I’m going to regret this later.

“Soooo, you like Miranda, then? Is she going to be your girlfriend?”

Not much later. Was I seriously having this conversation with my thirteen-year-old sister?

Book tour & giveaway – Life as a Teenage Vampire by Amanda Meuwissen

Life as a Teenage Vampire

by Amanda Meuwissen

GENRE:  YA Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Emery Mavus just wants to survive his senior year of high school. Becoming a vampire complicates things. So does a bizarre mentor, a group of vampire hunters, and an unexpected, new attraction for his openly gay best friend, Connor. An occasional uncontrollable hunger for blood might be the least of his worries.

The memory of Emery’s warm hug that morning sent a shiver through him. “You think you have it bad never being cast in leading roles? Where’s the gay romance box office hit I’ve been waiting for all my life? And if you say Brokeback Mountain to me, I will punch you in the boob.”

Aurora responded by punching him in the boob, which—ouch—really hurt. She was freakishly strong for someone so tiny. “Anyway, that isn’t even what we were talking about. I said I hate how half the time female roles are only written in to be romantic interests. No substance. No purpose. Just a tight ass and a pretty face to dress up the movie poster and give the guy some arm candy. Where’s the action film with the girl as the kickass sidekick or partner—or hey, as the hero herself—without needing to make it about sex? Why does there have to be romance in everything? Girls are just shoved into the supporting role, Asian girls even more so.”

Connor stole one of the fries from her plate while he tapped his feet on the seat he should have been sitting in. They were seniors; if they wanted to sit on the tables, they were allowed. Unless a teacher walked by. “It’s kind of funny, right?”

“What’s funny?”

“I’d give anything to be typecast as the love interest. Frankly, I’d trade spots with any girl in this school to have some of those stereotypes instead of my own.”

Aurora cocked her head at him, another fry suspended between them, having come dangerously close to getting ketchup in the long braid over her shoulder as she gestured. “You want to be an object?”

“I want to be an option.”

I asked the author to share chapters or sections that might have been cut from the final draft. 🙂

I am an adult fiction writer. My focus has always been on adult topics in sci-fi and fantasy, with story/character driven plots, and often graphic depictions of both violence and sex.

Life as a Teenage Vampire, on the other hand, is Young Adult, so I had to rethink my usual content when tackling this project. I wanted it to be the type of book that I could have picked up at my high school library when I was younger—i.e. sex can exist, but not graphically depicted.

This tale of vampires and high school life does deal with several themes that can be seen as adult. Death, sexuality, falling in love. But it also focuses on things that young teenagers face, like acceptance of self and moral decisions of right and wrong in a world that, frankly, isn’t black or white and never will be.

I think coming of age stories have to strike that balance between adult and young adult, because that’s the cusp the characters are on—that exact transition.

That said, I still found myself writing out scenes that are a little more explicitly racy. I never want to squelch my creativity or what comes to mind, and sometimes, while we might need to kill our darlings, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t write a scene to begin with. Everything informs on the characters and develops subtext that can be important for the scenes we do keep.

Suffice it to say, I can’t share the scene I cut here because of the nature of the content, but I can explain what it entailed.

After the main characters have their first intimate encounter, which is in the book but not gone into great detail, there is some time that passes where we can assume they do more as they are getting to know each other in this new way, especially being amorous teenagers.

The cut scene was a chance for them to express their desires in an open way that often only exists between friends—the characters being friends who are now being intimate gives them a rare opportunity to be honest from the start of their relationship in a way that is often missing for many adult couples.

While I think it’s an intriguing scene because of that—and rather sexy—I deemed it too far on the adult spectrum for a young adult audience.

Book tour & giveaway – The Mirror of Doom by Bailey Baxter

The Mirror of Doom

by Bailey Baxter

GENRE: Middle Grade

What would you do if you got stuck in another world? 12-year-old Tim Hunter and his two older siblings panicked. Just a little. (Can you blame them?) Unfortunately, the only way they can return home is to steal a magic mirror from an evil queen. Yes, that’s right. Evil! To make matters even worse, enemy soldiers, horrible creatures called galrogs, and even a dragon will do anything to stop them. Do they have what it takes to make it home alive? There’s one way to find out. This fun, fantasy-adventure for middle-grade readers is available on

With a sense of desperation, I pressed my shoulder through the mirror. Stretching my arm out as far as it could reach, I could just brush the diary with the tips of my fingers. I almost had it.

And then the worst things imaginable happened all at once.

The door flew open.

Kat yelled my name.

And I went sprawling head first through the mirror.

Pushed! Uncle Edgar pushed me!

I picked myself up off the hard wooden floor and looked around, stunned.

I was in a large, round room with very high ceilings. Sunlight streamed through long, narrow windows, revealing gray stone walls covered with tapestries, a big fireplace stained with soot, and one very plain bench. A tall, fancy mirror stood in the shadows.

The mirror!

I raced over to it — and stopped. A boy with dark spiky hair and skinny legs was staring back at me, fresh scrapes on his bony elbows and knees.

“Oh, no!” I said, sinking down to the floor.

The boy in the mirror did the same.

I reached out a shaky hand and felt the cool, hard surface.

It was solid, just like a normal mirror.

There was no way back.

A shadow disengaged from a tree and moved into the twilight. It was a hooded man in black, one of the three that were chasing him. In his hand glinted a curved sword. Jack turned to run but froze when the second hunter approached from the other side of the clearing. He too held a curved blade. Both men trained on him, stalking him.

“What do you want from me?” Jack cried out.

Silence filled the forest.

The black clad hunters continued to advance from both sides through the underbrush. When they came to the grass of bluebells, they entered without hesitation and raised their swords in unison.

A strange melody danced up from their knees as they moved to pin him in. Fear blinded Jack’s mind as he scooted to the center of the glade. The taste of bile came up into his mouth. He was going to die. He knew it.

The hunters tightened their grips on their swords, ready to strike down, when a silvery point suddenly jutted through the chest of one of them. His stormy blue eyes bulged in shock as blood spurted out around the point and poured down his black tunic. A grunt came from his mouth. His sword fell to the ground as he grabbed the steel point sticking out of his chest.

Behind him stood the pale-haired man. In his hand, he gripped the sword that was thrust through the hunter’s chest. With a jerk, he pulled it free, letting the man drop to the ground in a heap at his feet.

Book blast & giveaway – The Battle for Christmas by Jeremy Hinshaw

The Battle for Christmas by Jeremy Hinshaw

After training and practicing for the auditions, Andy’s friends excelled. Andy, however, failed miserably. When the positions were posted, his worst fears came true – he was the only angel not given a job for the birth of Lord Jesus.

Would Andy be the only angel not to have an assignment for this climactic event?

How did Heaven defend Bethlehem from the onslaught of Lucifer and his horde of demons?

Praise for the Book

This was a great book to bring alive the story of Jesus birth, especially for those who have heard it many times before. Although fiction, it challenges us to remember that we are not doing this on our own. There is a whole army of angels at our disposal.

Thank you Jeremy for captivating my thoughts and painting such a glorious picture, not often considered when thinking of that blessed day. From the very beginning as you described the landscapes I was hooked. The details breaking out the characters and each one’s place in the story are masterfully woven. The story is packed with enough intrigue, adventure, and truth to be enticing to readers of all ages, and especially the youth of today. Compared to other books I have read on the subject, this one takes the cake with its creative story-line that is jam packed with adventure, humor, and close-calls. I recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of adventure. A fresh take on the matter that is certain to wow its readers. Especially those interested in a view behind the veil that we all know exists!

I loved The Battle for Christmas. Not only is it a book I’ll read again, but it’s also a book I can’t wait to share with my children and nieces and nephews. In The Battle for Christmas we get a great fantasy paired with reminders of our hope and our faith. Plus, what an adventure! I really liked Andy. He’s the type of character young readers will want to emulate, and one we’ll want our children to emulate. I think his gift is one we all struggle with and one of the most important.

“Recently, Michael went to speak with the Romans,” Gabriel said. “He has convinced the Romans to tax the Jews for the second time. He will be returning to set the course for the Jews to appeal the tax. This will delay the tax long enough to set in motion the Lord Almighty’s timetable to send His Son to Earth.”
He motioned to Michael. Michael simply nodded as he stared blankly across the room.
“I spoke to the priest Zechariah,” Gabriel said. “I told him that he and his wife will have a child. This child will be the one from the desert preparing those for our Lord Almighty’s birth.”
Gabriel laid the scroll down to his right, placed both elbows on the table, and interlocked his fingers in front of him as if in prayer. The table creaked from the weight of his massive forearms. Gabriel was always direct and to the point.
“All angels will be needed for this event,” Gabriel continued.

Blog tour & giveaway – BAD BOYS AFTER DARK: DYLAN by Melissa Foster

One night and too much tequila might change their lives forever.

Bad Billionaires After Dark #2
Melissa Foster

Releasing Dec 21st, 2016
World Literary Press

Sinfully sexy bar owner Dylan Bad has a thing for needy women. He’s a savior, a knight in shining armor, and his mighty talented sword has no trouble bringing damsels in distress to their knees. Enter Tiffany Winters, a gorgeous cutthroat sports agent who looks like sex on legs, fucks like she’s passion personified, and wouldn’t let a man help her if she was hanging onto a ledge and he was her only hope. One night and too much tequila might change their lives forever. The question is, will either one survive?

“What’s your pleasure?” he asked with more than a hint of innuendo.

You. Naked, with your head buried between my legs, to start.

“Surprise me.” She watched him turn to prepare her drink and checked out the way his dark slacks hugged his perfect ass. It had been a long time since she’d found a man this attractive. But Mick Bad’s brother? That spelled trouble.

A minute later he slid two drinks across the bar. A cocky smile spread across his handsome face. “One Leg Spreader and one All Night Long.” He dragged out each seduction-laden word.

“A little overly confident, aren’t you?” She had no qualms about taking what she wanted—in a boardroom or a bedroom—and Dylan’s confidence was a definite turn-on.

He leaned across the bar, and the temperature around them spiked. “I was going to add a Blow Job, but I wasn’t sure how much you could handle.”

She held his challenging gaze. “I think the question is, can you keep up?”

“Dylan!” a guy called from across the room.

Dylan held up a finger in the guy’s direction, his eyes never leaving Tiffany’s. He leaned in so close she could smell alcohol on his breath—and God help her, she wanted to suck the taste off his tongue.

“Mark my words, gorgeous, you’ll be leaving here with me tonight.”

Heat streaked down her spine. “Cocky. I like that. Tell Mick I said congratulations.” She dropped her eyes as if she weren’t hanging on the very thought of devouring him, but couldn’t resist stealing another peek at the tempting beefcake as he walked away. Okay, maybe severallong glimpses, of which he caught two or three and returned with an I-can’t-wait-to-fuck-you grin that had her insides igniting.

She answered another call and a few text messages, and a short while later, Dylan’s voice spilled like warm cognac over her shoulder.

“You know what they say about wedding hookups?”

She lifted her gaze as he sat on the stool beside her. “What do they say?”

“They say they can’t happen if you don’t put your phone away.” Dylan boldly placed his hand on her thigh. Long, strong fingers pressed into her flesh, sending rivers of desire to the apex of her thighs.

She wondered how big other parts of his anatomy were, and couldn’t help stealing a quick glance. Oh yeah, he was packing major heat. A whiff of his spicy, masculine scent brought all her best parts pulsing to life. His scent alone probably brought more women to their knees than the Pope, but coupled with the sinful promises in his dark eyes, the guy was lethal.

“I don’t put my phone down for just anyone,” she answered, still holding his gaze. His hungry eyes dropped to her mouth, lingering there long enough to make her salivate. “Are you as good in the bedroom as you are behind the bar?”

“I’ll let you be the judge of that.” He leaned closer, placing his mouth beside her ear. “I’ll even let you hold your phone until you’re sure I’m worth it.”

Now, that was a plan she could get on board with, except for one minor worry. “You’re my colleague’s brother. I’m not sure you’re the smartest choice for me tonight.”

He flashed a wicked grin that she was sure opened many bedroom doors. “A gentleman never tells.”

“You might just be the perfect man.” Her phone vibrated again. She glanced at it, noting a follow-up email from Allison, and the time. It was nearly midnight. Dylan’s hand traveled further up her thigh, his fingertips sneaking beneath her skirt. He was brazen, and she liked that in a man.

He eyed her phone with a smirk and pressed his large hand to her cheek. His thumb moved over her lower lip and hooked behind her front teeth. Her entire body electrified as he delved deeper, brushing the tip over her tongue.

“When I get done with you, you will have forgotten what that thing in your hand is.”

He was smooth, practiced, and knew exactly what he was doing. Thank God. She had so little time for sex, she couldn’t afford to waste it with a guy who needed to be shown. Sliding her purse over her shoulder and still clutching her phone, she turned to step off the stool. His hand traveled even higher up her leg, a fingertip away from brushing over her sex, and she felt herself go damp. Her pulse accelerated with the urge to slide forward on her barstool and let him feel what he was doing to her, but she wasn’t ready to give him the upper hand.

She casually moved his hand and rose to her feet.

He spoke in a greedy voice directly into her ear. “We’re going to have to change your name.” He swung his jacket over his shoulder and guided her toward the door.

“You’re far too hot for Winters.” He pushed the door open and lowered his mouth to her neck, grazing his teeth along the base—the absolute most sensitive spot on her entire body—and sending shivers down her spine. “From now on, you’re my Summers.”

As her body flamed and her insides melted, her mind struggled to figure out how he knew her name and to deny what he’d just said. She was no man’s anything. She turned to tell him just that, and he backed her up against the brick wall. A cool breeze sailed over her skin as he grabbed her wrists and pinned them beside her head, trapping her between the wall and his hard body. He claimed her mouth with fierce domination. The way he ate at her mouth and his hips gyrated against hers with no care about being out in public should have had her fighting harder to regain the upper hand. But the harder she fought to reclaim her rational thoughts, the more she craved him. Every part of her tingled and burned for more. Her nipples tightened to painful peaks, her sex throbbed, and her knees weakened. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d encountered someone so potently male, if ever, and she fucking loved it. Shocked at her own hungry response to his ravishment, she gave in to the unfamiliar thrills racing through her and returned his efforts with reckless abandon. But the more she gave, the softer the kisses became, until his lips were brushing lightly over hers, taunting her. He pulled back with every crane of her neck as she sought more. Still restraining her arms, he put space between their bodies. Cool air whooshed between them, causing her nipples to prickle even more painfully with the need to be touched.

“Oh, yes,” he said with a territorial look in his eyes. “You’re my Summers, all right.”

As blood began to flow to her brain again, the realization of her loss of control was staggering. She lifted her chin and wrenched her hands free. Holding his challenging and so-fucking-hot gaze, she grabbed hold of his loosened tie and tugged him in for another scorching kiss. When she felt his muscles relax, she spun him against the wall with a thud, grinning at the shock registering in his gorgeous eyes.

“I’m no man’s anything. But you can be my stress relief for the next hour.” She dragged her hand down his impressively broad chest and over his taut abs, still clutching her phone, and cupped the formidable bulge in his trousers.

“That is, if you can keep it up that long.”

Two All New, Sexy Riley O’Brien & Co. Novellas

A Riley O’Brien & Co. Novella
Jenna Sutton
Released Nov 15th, 2016

Jake Lilliard has always been a gambling man. So far, all the risks he’s taken — like moving to San Francisco and joining Riley O’Brien & Co. — have paid off. Now he’s ready to take the biggest risk of all: acting on his feelings for Kyla Andrews. As a trainee in his department, she’s off limits. But as soon as Kyla moves on to another job, he is going to make her his. He’s waited long enough…
When tragedy struck Kyla’s family years ago, she started playing it safe. She doesn’t take risks with her job or her heart, and she refuses to be a cliché – the foolish woman who falls for her sexy boss. Yet Jake is everything she has ever wanted, and it’s impossible to resist him and his enticing kisses.

Just when it seems that the gamble they took will pay off, Jake’s past threatens his future with Kyla. He knows lady luck is fickle, but she’s always had a soft spot for him. He’s hoping she won’t turn her back on him when he needs her the most…

Metal wall sconces illuminated the corridor, throwing pools of golden light on the dark wood plank floors. A door opened a few feet ahead of her, and Jake emerged from it. He froze when he saw her, his eyes widening before he ambled toward her.

The narrow corridor made her even more aware of his height and muscular physique, and her body reacted the way it always did when got close. Her heart began to pound, and her breathing grew shallow. Suddenly, her throat was dry, and she swallowed thickly.

Stopping right in front of her, he looked down into her face. His eyes caught the light from the sconces, glimmering with a million shades of green and gold. They dropped to her mouth before jumping back to hers.

“You’ve got sugar on your lips,” he notified her, his voice low and gravelly.

Without thinking, she licked her upper lip. He moved closer, the front of his long-sleeved dress shirt brushing against her chest. She nervously stepped back, afraid that she might throw herself at him. He followed until her back was against the wall. She sucked in a shaky breath, trying not to let him see how much his nearness affected her.

“Not there.” He touched his thumb to her lower lip, toward the corner. “Here.”

Dropping his head, he licked the spot where his thumb had been. She gasped, certain that she was having yet another X-rated dream starring Jake. When his tongue flicked along the outer edge of her upper lip, she realized it wasn’t a dream.

“And you’ve got some here,” he murmured, tracing her lower lip with his tongue.

She gripped his upper arms, his biceps rock hard under her fingers. “What are you doing?” she breathed against his mouth.

He drew back to stare into her eyes. “I’m not your boss anymore, Kyla. I’m just a guy who works for the same company you do, and lucky for me, that company doesn’t have any rules against co-workers dating, even if they’re in the same department.”

She barely heard a word he said because her ears were roaring with her pulse. “What?”

He smiled slowly, and she couldn’t tear her eyes from his mouth. She clutched his arms tighter, wanting those lips on every part of her body.

“I’m not your boss anymore,” he repeated. “I have been counting the days until … until I could …”

“Until you could what?” she whispered.

“Until I could be with you,” he answered hoarsely. “That’s all I want … a chance to be with you.”

Title: Stay
Author: Chelsea Camaron

Genre: Dark Romance
Release Date: Available Now

Fair Warning … This isn’t a sappy romance. It’s not sweet. It’s far from anything you would want to imagine. This is a story to leave you feeling dirty.

Nothing about us is normal.
Nothing about us is natural.

Can love ultimately be defined in such ways, truly? This is our story.

He is a hitman. The very one who took my family the night that changed us both forever. Something in my eyes stopped him from killing me. Something in my eyes called out for him to take me.

At ten he captured me, at fifteen he consumed me, and at eighteen he owned me.

Outsiders think he’s my father … that is so far from the truth.

Our twisted desires fuel the darkness that lies deep inside us both. My innocence never existed. He takes me as I am.

I’ve never seen a fire spread so easily or so rapidly,” declared Cosmith. “And especially not on such damp soil.” He clenched his jaw. “I smell a rat. This was no accident, my friends. It is chemical warfare. The New Republic is trying to eliminate us who seek the Duchess.”

“They damn near succeeded,” muttered Bos.

“But why would they leave behind their symbol to convict themselves?” challenged young Macmillan.
Would they not wish to keep an assassination classified?”

“Not if they wish to warn the survivors—us—who we’re dealing with,” said Cosmith shrewdly. “This here?” He tapped knowingly against the symbol carved into the stone. “This is called ‘leaving your mark.’ It’s a Jordinian custom for claiming a crime committed.”

Macmillan raised an eyebrow. “And you would know this

“This does not come as news to me,” interrupted Bos flatly. “The Republic will slaughter whomever they please, however they shall, to ensure their authority and control. It has been this way since they murdered my Emperor.”

“And it appears they’ve set an assassin on our tail,” said Cosmith grimly.

“So what do we do?” Macmillan looked between them.
Bos watched them, the last men standing in their now pitiful search party. “We continue,” he suggested.

“I bet you were adorable.” He put his knuckle under her chin and encouraged her to lift her head. She rolled back over and settled against his shoulder.“I don’t want to be adorable. I want to be impossible.”
“How do you mean?” He kissed her forehead.

“I want to be impossible for you to forget, impossible for you to keep your hands off of.” She leaned up for a kiss.

“You’re my impossible then. Have no fear.” He tenderly reminded her he was her impossible, too, with his lips.

She put her hand against his stomach and snuggled in. “This is my spot. Right here. With you—it’s home.”

He swallowed before talking to the ceiling. “My heart was like a fist. Where I am? It’s not a place you plan to survive. I’ve been there for years, and it’s not about skill; it’s not even about luck. You get strapped into a machine, and fate’s driving. You can’t get out even if you want to. So you submit to it. You harden your soul. You get ready to die.”

He shifted, rolling on top of her. She sighed in contentment. Being beneath him made her feel safe and secure.

He kissed her lips, then the tip of her nose, before continuing. “But with you, it’s like my heart’s opening up, and I’m terrified to feel, after all this time. Yet I don’t have a choice. No matter where I am, I draw your face whenever I get a scrap of paper.”

He laughed a little. “We found a puppy, and I named it Fallen, just so I could say your name over and over. The guys think I’m crazy—such a strange name for a dog. But I don’t care. I’m gasping for you every moment I’m awake. And I’m making choices to keep me alive through the week.”

His eyes searched hers. “What if I’m not as tough as I was in the beginning? God, I hope no one is affected by my distraction with this. But in the end there’s you. Only you. Do what you have to to get back to me when you’re awake. You have to. I need you more than air, more than life right now. The softness of you, the tenderness in your eyes when you see me. I’m trying to force fate to throw me in your direction. To hurl me at you somehow. I don’t know if it will work. But I’m praying for it.”

Fallen touched his face, then his neck. “I will do everything I can to find you.”

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

“Where are you going?” I taunt. “There’s nowhere to hide.”

Jack Frost doesn’t answer. Under the canopy of winter-crystallized trees, he crawls across the snow. His tall, muscular body leaves a trail of berry-red blood behind him. He looks desperate to put distance between us.

I begin to whistle softly and draw closer to admire my handiwork. Broken nose. Swollen eye. An arrow buried deep in his leg. Ah, such a beautiful sight to behold. I turn to Blitzen, my most loyal of companions, and smile. “Thank you, friend. Without you, I wouldn’t have made it.”

Blitzen gives an affirmative snort, staying close to our sleigh and supplies. His strong legs and zesty spirit had kept me alive for the last two weeks. The Artic is a cold house for the unwary. Nothing in it ever stirs. Nothing moves. Nothing sings. Yet he had guided me through it, his hooves detonating like muffled grenades as they crunched the powdery snow. We’d traveled over timeworn mountains, through tomblike valleys and flash-frozen rivers. I plan on rewarding Blitzen with his favorite food once we’re back in Santa’s Village. It’ll be agaric mushrooms for life. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

First things first though: I cock my crossbow.

Upon hearing that sound, Frost forces his knees and elbows to move faster. He fights for his life like a desperate wild animal at death’s door. The expression of terror on his face is absolutely priceless. I wonder if he’ll start begging soon. Even if he does, it won’t do him any good. I won’t hesitate to pull the trigger and send one final bolt into his black heart.

For my friends…for my parents…

“Mmm,” I utter, savoring the moment. “This is even better than I imagined.” As I loom over him, a sudden wave of fury grips me. I violently plant my boot in his shoulder, prompting a muffled groan from him. Through gritted teeth I hiss, “And I’ve imagined this a lot.”

I remove my foot. Frost rolls over onto his back and gazes up at me in defeat. “Don’t do this, Lucian. Please.”

Ah, finally.

“Do you think begging is going to help? It didn’t help my parents or the other elves. They died just the same, all shaking, bleeding, and crying…and all because of you.” I point the loaded crossbow at his chest. “Now it’s your turn to die.”

“Wait!” He lifts up a trembling hand. “I can grant you great powers, unimaginable abilities, even immortality! Y-you could be the most powerful elf who’s ever lived!”

“Power?” I scoff. “I don’t want power. This is all I want.”

“Revenge won’t bring your parents back.”

I consider his words for a moment and do see the truth in them, but the rage inside pushes me on. “No, but it’s going to feel pretty good.” My finger slides the safety off.

Frost’s eyes widen.

Suddenly a deep, loud sound echoes all about us, seemingly coming from every direction. They disturb the serene beauty of this frozen, crystal paradise where Frost is meant to meet his doom. Puzzled, I lower my crossbow and search for the source. My eyes scan through the tall, gray trees, their skeletal wooden arms knocking against one another in the slight breeze, but I catch nothing in my gaze except the clear, blue skies beyond. What the heck’s going on? Confused, I dart my eyes in every direction. And why is that annoying buzzing getting louder?

Beep! Beep! Beep!

A sense of déjà vu hits me.

Wait! That sound… Isn’t that…?

The beeping continues to assault my ears for several more moments, muddling my senses.

“No!” I wail when I finally remember. “No! Not yet!”

My desperate cries prove futile, though, as my crossbow melts in my hands. Its liquefied remnants splash at my feet. It doesn’t take long for the surrounding trees to follow suit, forming charcoal-gray puddles on the ground. Blitzen, too, begins to disintegrate where he stands. His fur, flesh, and bones dissolves into a paste and seep into the ground

“No!” Without wasting time, I jump on Frost, wrap my hands around his cold neck, and begin to viciously choke him. “I’ll kill you with my bare hands!”

Rather than panicking or pleading for mercy, he only laughs in my face, knowing full well it’s too late. His flesh quickly melts like hot wax until my fingers are kneading the remaining mess.

I punch the ground with my fists again and again, even as they start melting away. “Come on! I just needed another minute!”

As I beg for more time, I feel my bones softening, becoming more pliable, like iron morphing into licorice. Soon I am unable to hold my weight, and I topple over, falling to the icy ground.

Title: Mary’s Song (Dream Horse Adventure Book 1) | Author: Susan Count Genre: Children’s Fiction | Number of Pages: 122 | Publisher: Hastings Creations Group Release Date: October 20, 2016

Book Description:

Mary’s heart breaks over the pending destruction of a beautiful, but damaged filly. When life is not fair, the courageous challenge the obstacles. Twelve-year-old Mary was disabled at the age of four by the same virus that took the life of her mother. While she longs to have a horse of her own, she’s limited to reading horse books. A talented artist, she spends her days on a blanket in the grass sketching the horses at the farm next door. She falls in love with one of the foals and is outraged to learn the filly is considered worthless as it was born lame. Mary befriends and enlists the help of twelve-year-old Laura, whose family owns the horse farm. Against the better judgment of the farm manager, a brief reprieve is negotiated for the foal’s life. The girls conspire to raise money to save her, but time is running out. Sadly, it appears the expensive surgery the foal needs has little chance to correct her problem anyway. Mary isn’t about to give up. She sacrifices what she holds dear, including the trust of her papa, to gain her heart’s desire. Will she lose everything in her struggle to save the foal?

In the year 1952

“Maybe today?” Twelve-year-old Mary gripped the arm of her wheelchair with one hand and the bedrail with the other. Her weight balanced on the edge of the bed, and she inched forward onto her feet. Her legs trembled and buckled. As her knees slammed onto the wood floor, she grabbed desperately for the dresser, but snatched instead the crocheted covering. When it ripped away from the dresser top, her favorite carved horse sailed across the room, careening into the wall. One of the Morgan mare’s legs and its ornately carved black tail snapped off as it ricocheted under the bed.

Ignoring the pain in her knees, she peered under the bed. The rest of the disfigured horse lay out of her reach. Already sprawled across the floor, she scooted to retrieve the severed pieces and cradled them in her hands. “I have to hide you.”

Papa would be so angry if he saw Mama’s horse was broken. Heavy footsteps rushed toward her.

“Lame and worthless. Just like me.” She slipped the broken horse into her skirt pocket. She struggled and strained to pull herself up off the floor, but collapsed as Papa burst into her room.

“What happened? I heard a commotion… Mary?” He dropped to his knee beside her. “What happened? Are you hurt?”

“I lost my balance when I tried to stand. I’m fine.”

“Let’s get you off the floor, shall we?” He lifted and placed her on the bed. “I think it would be best to call the doctor.”

“I’m fine!” Mary said a little louder than she intended. “The hot rock therapy didn’t help.”

Papa sat on the bed and took her hand. “Don’t give up. We’ll find a therapy, my Mary. We’ll never stop trying.” He patted her hand. “You sure you’re all right? Maybe you should lie down.”

“I said I’m fine.” But she looked out the window instead of into his eyes. She would never be all right. “Can you take me outside now?”

“If you’re sure. Let’s get you out in some fresh air.” He dropped a paper-wrapped bundle of carrot pieces in her lap.

Mary tucked her long dark hair behind her ears. Gathering her sketchpad and pencils to her chest, she drew a deep breath and nodded.

In a practiced motion, he slung her blanket over his shoulder and scooped her from the bed.

“I want to believe I’ll walk someday, but sometimes, I just can’t.” She tossed him a hint of a smile. He carried her through the colonial house, past the white porch pillars, and across the field. He was so strong it made her feel safe. He was certainly the most handsome papa in all the world.

The white oak had not leafed yet, so he placed her blanket in the shade of the pines out of the warm Texas sun. Mary smoothed her skirt and spread her art materials. “You were right about throwing carrots over the fence to bring the mares closer.” She retrieved an art pencil hidden in the folds of her blanket. “Look. Here they come.” She pointed with her pencil. “They see me and gallop like crazy to get here. The foals buck and kick the whole way. Our new neighbors are so lucky. I’d like to have a pasture full of Morgan horses.”

“At least you get to enjoy them. I have to go now.” He kissed the top of her head. “Have a nice day. Mr. Joe is working in the gardens, so when you’re ready to go back to the house, holler for him.”

“Will you be gone long?”

His face tensed, and his dark eyebrows pulled together. He looked over the meadow, frowning. “Only a few days this time.”

“I wish you didn’t always have to go. I miss you so much.”

“I know it’s hard on you. If it makes you feel any better, I don’t like leaving you either. But I have business in New Orleans, and then I’m going to Destin, Florida. A doctor there thinks he can help you.”

Her temper flared, and she slashed a big ugly squiggle across the sketchpad. “Not another one, Papa! You thought the medicine man would be the miracle cure. He danced and chanted and kept me in a dumb teepee for two days. Magic smoke. And for what?”

“Well… it wasn’t one of my better ideas.”

“I thought Mrs. Tate was going to faint when you told her where we’d been. She walked around the house all day shaking her feather duster and muttering ‘pagan gods’, something about never taking another day off, and praying real loud to God asking him to forgive you.”

“Glad I missed that, but I’m not giving up. I’ll consider any opportunity to heal you.” He straightened his vest and tucked his thumbs in its little pockets. “If this technique can offer us hope, we have to try. The clinic would float you in emerald-colored seawater. Then they’d take you to the ‘Fountain Of Youth’.”

Her shoulders slumped with an exhale. “I don’t need to get any younger. I need to walk.”

“And walk you shall. That is just the name given to the spring by the explorer who discovered it.” He patted her hand. “Sketch me several poses of the filly beside the dappled gray mare while I’m gone. What is it about her that always draws my eye?”

“She’s special! I sketch her the most. The other foals will scatter, but she seems to want to be with me. If she was on this side of the fence, I think she’d be in my lap.” Mary flipped to a clean paper. “It’s her eyes. Our souls connect when our eyes meet. Don’t you think they look like dark chocolate?” Mary warmed at the thought. “She is my favorite. What a character. She hides behind her mama sometimes and plays hide and seek with me.” A frown wiped the smile off her face. “I think there might be something wrong. She limps sometimes.”

Papa checked his watch and frowned. “Hum, that can’t be good. Say, when I get home, I will have a little something special I ordered for you. Don’t ask me what it is and ruin the surprise.”

“No fair! Is it a book on the Lipizzaners?”

“You’re a bad guesser.”

“Whatever it is, I’ll love it.”

Papa grinned, tossed a piece of chocolate in her lap, and left.

“Thanks!” She waved and sailed a few carrot offerings over the fence to the gathered herd. They rushed to grab the bribe. With ears flattened, the horses jostled, shoved, and charged at one another to gobble the carrots. When the treats were gone, the mares went back to grazing. As the foals cavorted in circles around their dams, Mary inhaled the delight of being in their company. To draw a foal, she took a snapshot with her mind and sketched it in a great flurry. After capturing the likeness, she fussed with the details and the shading. A twine-wrapped portfolio she kept in her library bulged with sketches. Each sketch was a secret wish to ride, wild and free, someday.

She imagined herself cantering across a meadow polka-dotted with pink flowers. Her hair streamed behind her. Her arms held wide as if to soar. The palomino horse moved in response to her thoughts. A smile lifted and softened her face.

Mary shifted her useless legs to balance the sketchpad better. “It’s not just a dream.” The filly cocked her feminine head to the side and peered at the curiosity in the grass. Mary stared back, hoping the filly would hold the pose long enough for her to soak in every detail. The dark graphite pencil seemed to flow on its own, and soon the rough outline of the curious baby splashed across the paper.

“I will sketch you every minute until Papa comes home with my surprise. It might be—could be—a horse.”

About the Author

One day…I began to write with no preconceived ideas about anything. I’d read what I had written the day before and add another scene to the adventure. No one could have been more astounded than I was when it turned into a book. The whole process gave me great joy and restored my spirit after a season of loss. My motivation was my desire to bless one particular young lady with a story to show her a love relationship in a family, with the Lord, and with a horse. I truly thought the story would remain in a drawer until she was old enough to read it. Surprise.

I write at an antique secretary desk which belonged to the same grandmother who introduced me to horse books. The desk has secret compartments and occupies a glass room with a forest view. Bunnies and cardinals regularly interrupt my muse, as do my horses grazing in a clearing.

Though I am a rider and lover of horses, I make no claims of expertise in any riding discipline. I hope that my research keeps me from annoying those who would know.

The only thing more fun than riding might be writing horse adventure stories.

Book tour & giveaway – Sarah by Teri Polen

by Teri Polen

GENRE: YA horror/thriller

Seventeen-year-old horror fan Cain Shannon thought helping a ghost find her killers would be the supernatural adventure of a lifetime.  Now, he just hopes to survive long enough to protect his family and friends from her.

A bet between friends goes horribly wrong, resulting in Sarah’s death.  When she returns to seek justice against those responsible, Cain agrees to help her.  But when he discovers Sarah has been hijacking his body, he realizes she wants retribution instead of justice.

Terrified of what could have happened when he wasn’t in control, Cain commands Sarah to leave his house – but exorcising her isn’t that easy.  She retaliates against her murderers in bloody, horrific ways, each death making her stronger, then sets her sights on Cain.  With the help of friends, Cain fights to save himself and his loved ones and searches for a way to stop Sarah before she kills again.

With my hand on Eby’s back, I felt a rumble go through him as he growled at Sarah. Crouched on all fours, his body was rigid and I figured he was as nervous about running by her as I was. Sarah slowly rose off the floor, and I felt the muscles in Eby’s haunches grow even tauter in anticipation.

What happened next was over in the blink of an eye, but I saw everything as if in slow motion. Sarah shot toward me like a bullet out of a gun. Simultaneously, Eby leaped in front of me, attempting to block Sarah from reaching me. Although a valiant effort, Eby had no effect on Sarah and sailed right through her semi-transparent shape, but I loved my brave furry friend for trying.

When she hit my chest, I felt it at my core, like a wrecking ball had plowed into me. But she didn’t just hit me, Sarah was inside me again and I could feel her moving, as I felt myself fading, my life energy being drained. When Sarah had been a passenger within me before, I’d never felt her presence. This feeling was completely foreign to me. She was something palpable, not like an internal organ, but more of an extension of myself, an extra arm or leg. Just before my world went black, I had a brief connection with Sarah’s corrupted mind and the atrocities I saw made me welcome the darkness as it enveloped me.

It might sound strange to some people, but interviewing my characters allows me to have a better understanding of them and what makes them tick – and it can also be surprising at times, when they reveal things I never knew about them.  Below is an interview I had a couple of years ago with 17-year-old Cain Shannon, the main character in Sarah.

Describe yourself in 5 words:  soccer player, horror book/movie fan, son, brother, friend

I’m really awkward around girls and I don’t understand them or their motives.  This one girl, Erin, started paying attention to me and asked me out, so I went.  I never stopped to think if I liked her or not, I mean, she’s really hot and popular, I’d never had a girlfriend, and I thought if I went out with her, maybe things would be easier for me.  You know, as far as understanding girls.  But now?  I don’t give a crap about her.  We have nothing in common and all she’s worried about is clothes, shoes, and being seen with the ‘right’ people.  I want to break up with her, but as Finn, my best friend, says, I need to grow a set before that will happen.  I know I shouldn’t be worried about hurting her feelings – she sure doesn’t care about mine, but when it comes right down to it, I just don’t know how to do it.  What if she cries?  Then I’ll feel guilty and would probably tell her I didn’t mean it.  I have no idea what to do with a crying woman.

Is there someone you like?  Um, yeah, there is.  There’s this girl, Lindsey, in my English lit class.  She’s just – I’m not very good with words, but when she walks into the room, everything else fades away and she’s all I see.  She sits beside me in class and when I talk to her it seems easy, you know?  Natural.  She’s not like Erin or any of her friends.  Lindsey plays the cello in the orchestra, loves animals, and volunteers at the animal shelter, and we’ve seen a lot of the same movies and read the same books.  Since her younger brother is on the soccer team, she comes to all the games and actually understands what’s happening, so we can talk about soccer.

Tell me about your family:  It’s me, my mom, and 7-year-old sister, Maddie.  And my cat, Eby.  He thinks he’s people.  My Dad died in a car accident last year.  He was on his way home from the airport when someone crossed the median and hit him – he was killed instantly.  We were all devastated.  My parents had been together for over 20 years and I know my mom still misses him – I mean, we all do, but I still hear her crying at night sometimes, so I do what I can to take some of the responsibility off her.  She’s a realtor and her hours can be crazy, so some evenings I’m left to take care of Maddie, but I really don’t mind.  She’s a pretty cool kid.  In a way, she’s the opposite of me.  Completely clumsy and uncoordinated, but makes friends with everyone and isn’t afraid to tell people what she thinks.  You gotta admire that in a kid.  But it’s just scary, though, you know?  The way Dad was here and then he was gone.  It could happen to anyone at any time and I don’t think Mom would be able to live through something like that again, so I have to make sure it doesn’t happen.  I take care of my family now.

What’s going on in your house?  I’m living my own personal horror movie, that’s what’s going on.  Sarah invited herself into my body after I was injured and drew on my energy, which allowed her to become a murderous, psychotic spirit bent on revenge.  I’m sorry as hell for what happened to her, but that doesn’t justify killing the guys responsible for her death.  And now she’s threatened me and my family.  With everything my Mom’s been through, I refuse to involve her in this.  Finn and I can handle it and somehow we’ll find a way to get rid of Sarah.  But right now, I don’t feel safe in my own home.  She’s getting stronger and I don’t know what she’ll do next.  Whatever happens, I’ll protect my family with my life.

Book blast & giveaway – Captain Hawkins by H. Peter Alesso

Captain Hawkins

by H. Peter Alesso

GENRE: Sci-fi

Jamie Hawkins was living on an obscure planet in the twenty third-century when on one fateful night—his life changed forever. His heroic effort to save the lives of innocent women and children, caught in the cross-fire of war, placed him squarely in the crosshairs of avenging soldiers.

A former marine, Hawkins was stunned when his rescue effort was seen as treachery. Unfairly convicted of treason by a corrupt judge, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on an infamous penal colony.

Once in prison, Hawkins was mistreated by a paranoid warden, but his courage and perseverance won him the admiration and trust of his fellow convicts. While he was plotting his escape, an enemy attacked the planet—giving this daring warrior his chance. Together with his fellow prisoners, he launched a bold assault and high-jacked an enemy warship.

From then on, the exploits of Captain Jamie Hawkins became legendary.

Joshua licked his lips and took a deep breath to gather his wits.

“Now let’s start again with our portrait of various colors of gray, brown, black, and flesh tone that shows the image of Mona Lisa. Next, suppose that I took a black felt pen and drew a sketch of Captain Hawkins right over the portrait, only I centered it catty-corner. I could still recognize the image of the woman with its stark colors, but overlaid on that, I would also see the outline of a man in ink, in its skewed position. My brain could flip, back and forth, between the two; seeing them individually, as well as a composite. If I cut this into a thousand irregularly sized pieces and spread those pieces out. Can you image how you would go about reassembling them?”

“I don’t get where you’re going with this.”

“Let’s say a kid looked at the thousand pieces of our puzzle and was told to assembly them into a portrait of the Mona Lisa. Once he began, he would connect pieces of vivid colors and woman’s image would emerge, but he would, also, see thick black lines crossing through the woman. At first he wouldn’t be able to recognize that the black lines connected in a meaningful way, but eventually, as he filled in more and more of the puzzle, he would see both the Mona Lisa image and a second image, the outline of a man.”

Hawkins looked at him.

“That’s what happened to me,” said Joshua, becoming agitated. “I’ve decrypted a pattern in the enemy’s communications, and as I was decoding some of their orders, I began to recognize an overlapping pattern.”

“That’s great. Why didn’t you just say that?”

“Because the secret communication pattern, I was working on—had the overlying pattern of the deep space signal, I was also interested in. When I was putting the first ‘image’ together, I recognized the second.”

“Huh? I don’t understand?”

“Neither does the enemy security forces. They’re running around thinking they have outside agents penetrating their security organization when the conflicting orders and misdirection they are experiencing, are really a result of deep space signals.”

“Hey,” I squealed, waving my hand in the air. I was so happy my brother would finally get to meet Jack.
He walked toward me with a smile, but when he caught sight of Jack, that smile turned into an all-out heated glare. “What the fuck are you doing here?” he growled, quickening his pace.
Jack froze and gripped my arm, grumbling, “Shit,” before pulling me around to face him. “Bristol, listen to me. This isn’t how I wanted you to find out.”
Everything was happening so fast, I didn’t know what to think. “Find out what?” I asked desperately.
Before he could reply, Ryan ripped me out of Jack’s hold and pushed him away. Jaw tense, Jack was ready to fight, but I couldn’t let that happen. “Ryan, stop!” I shouted, digging my nails in his shoulder.
Jerking his head around, he glared straight at me. “Do you even know who this cocksucker is? He’s playing you to get back at me.”
I threw my hands in the air. “What the hell are you talking about? How do you even know him?”
Jack’s eyes never left mine, the anguish on his face making me sicker by the second. I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like what came out of Ryan’s mouth. He scoffed incredulously and spat at Jack. “He’s Jaxon fucking Reed, the asshole on the team I’ve been telling you about. Don’t tell me you didn’t know?”
Jack stepped forward, but then again, that wasn’t his name. It was Jaxon Reed.

Book tour & giveaway – Exit Signs by Patrice Locke

Exit Signs

by Patrice Locke

GENRE:   Romantic Comedy

Tracy Price has a documentary-style life until rockstar Jesse Elliot rewrites her script and takes the wheel to drive her crazy.

In her quest to find a writer missing since the 1930’s, Tracy thinks she has discovered exactly how to handle her new relationship. But she may be listening to the wrong voice.

Then Tracy and Jesse find out they’ve both been keeping some big secrets, and the truth may ruin everything.

Will sharing the missing writer’s story open both their hearts?

Jesse lunged toward me. It was too late. I had already launched. He reached out but didn’t connect. Instead, I broke the trajectory of my upper body by grabbing him at chest level and sliding down. He was pushed backward into the table, which stabilized our ungainly host-parasite tableau. He softened my landing so that physically I was fine, but my pride was ready for intensive care.

Heaped at his feet, like a demented penitent, I hugged his knees, my face pressed flat into his thighs. I might as well stay down. What’s worse? To stand up and face you, or remain here, nestled between your legs? What do you think? Then, the finishing touch: I erupted into nervous, snorting laughter. He guessed there was no serious injury.

“It’s nice to see you, too. You are okay, aren’t you? Can you stand?” He reached for my arms to unwrap them from his legs and help me up. I jammed my eyelids together to conjure up a do-over, but no such luck.

I would have to deal with it.

He held my elbows in his hands. “I guess we were both in a hurry to see each other.”

I do appreciate your attempt to lighten the mood, but you are standing SO close. I can feel your body heat. Or is that mine? By the way, you smell tart and fresh, like a lime.

I stared at his shoulder. My dignity meter was stuck on empty.

“Enthusiastic greeting. Thanks for that.” He was blatantly amused.

“It was nothing.” I stepped backward to regain a semblance of independence. Don’t mock me. But, you did go to all the trouble to bring your hair. And your eyes. I might forgive you for witnessing my disgrace. That hair.

Patrice Locke – Why I write the kinds of books I do

Romantic comedy satisfies two of my biggest urges – first, it allows me to give everyone I write about a happy ending.

Second, I can make my characters the kind of clever we all wish we were in real life. They can engage in quick-fire “effortless” banter that’s not effortless at all, the repartee most of us never think of in the moment. Personally, I’m only clever way after the fact. And in real life, you can’t call someone and say, “Remember when you said…? Well, what I should have said was…” Well, I guess you could do that. But involuntary commitment would probably follow.

I also enjoy having my characters behave the way I never would in real life. It’s invigorating. For example, when heroine/narrator Tracy meets rock star Jesse she is blindsided by her over-the-top reaction to him.

From Chapter One of Exit Signs, Tracy thinks:

This was a teenage crush. But how could that be? I was over thirty. It was ridiculous and mortifying, and I had no idea how to behave. I wished I’d had a middle school crush or a movie star idol, anything that might have prepared me for this full-blown physical infatuation. But when I was younger, I was much too mature for this sort of thing.

He raked some strands of his blue-black hair away from his forehead. The hair fell right back onto the shoreline of his face like a wave on a beach. I thought of the cliché movie scene where the action cuts to an agitated ocean to symbolize sex. I cleared my throat, and ordered myself to get a grip.

Instead, I surprised us both by asking him my name. “Tracy Price?”

Yes.” He confirmed my identity. “It’s nice to meet you.”

He was all-business; I was all over the place. (End of excerpt)

I especially enjoyed writing the relationship between narrator Tracy and her best friend Randi, like the following exchange when Randi tries to warn Tracy about her crush on Jesse.

Excerpt from Exit Signs.

“I’d like to think he’s quite nice,” I said. “Though at times, I don’t think he is. But it’s not intentional. I don’t think. He gets distracted. But he’s a good person.”

“He’s not. Wake up and read the blogs. He’s a preening pretty boy prancing around.”

“That’s an exaggeration. Wait, did you say preening pretty boy?” That and the word ‘prance’ set me off.

Randi wanted to get back to business. “This is serious.”

I leaned back in my chair and nodded for her to continue. “I’m all ears.”

“And quite a bit of mouth . . . anyway, he sucks the life out of people. Remember what he wrote about his wife? He’s a tool, like a hammer and you’re the nail. Better yet, he’s the screwdriver and you’re getting . . .”

“It’s his ex wife. And where do you get this stuff? You should write ads for Home Depot.”

“Trust me, you need somebody to tell you these things because you’re heading for disaster. And I’m the one who’s going to have to suffer through your pain, so for my sake, will you snap out of it now? Call him and tell him to eat shit and die.”

“Or maybe something less aggressive? ‘Please eat something mildly nauseating and take a long nap?’ You’re being hard on him. He hasn’t done anything.”

“Except burrow into your brain and disconnect logic and sanity. It will end in suffering.” (End of Excerpt)

The bottom line is, I like to create complex characters and then get inside their heads to see how they react and what they say in specific, difficult situations. That’s what I aim for. I didn’t know I was writing romantic comedy until I finished my third book.  I tossed the first two because I decided they didn’t work. Then I became obsessed with the third, “Exit Signs,” which Soul Mate Publishing released at the end of September.  I like all the characters in the book, even the dragon-like boss. I enjoyed every minute living with them in my head.

Thank you for having me on your blog!

Lt. Ryan Heller, US Navy SEAL, is accustomed to facing death. When his team is attacked by Taliban fighters he thinks his last day is upon him, until an unknown sniper saves their lives. The prickly, green-eyed beauty handles a rifle as easily as most women handle a purse, but who is she? And what is she doing in the middle of a war zone? He is intrigued, and attracted, but his instincts and her piercing, tiger-like stare tell him to tread carefully.

Afghanistan’s Bagram Valley is not the ideal place to find love, but these two are trained to make the best of bad situations. Geography alone makes starting a relationship challenging enough, but caught between extremists and an unhinged, obsessed Mitchell makes it downright deadly.

She remembered the face of the first man she’d ever killed: the rest of them . . . not so much.

Regulating her breathing, Cat peered through the scope of the .416 rifle as snow fell fitfully, almost as if it didn’t want to reach the ground.  The snap of AK fire interspersed with the shouts of the Taliban firing the Russian-made weapons bounced around the ravine below her.  She scowled.

Half an hour ago she’d been sitting in a hidden mountain cave, relatively warm, monitoring two-way radio and cell chatter with a pair of specially designed headphones, using very expensive, top-secret, brand new, state-of-the-art technology.  Now, because of what she’d heard she was lying on a ledge in the snow with her rifle, more than a kilometer from her relatively warm cave.

“Do you have them?” she whispered as the crosshairs found one turban-clad head.

“The SEALs are less than half a klick in front of them and losing ground.”  Tripp grunted.  “What the hell are they doing out here?”

“Dying,” she replied in a solemn voice.  “But we’re not going to let that happen, are we?”

Book tour & giveaway – Westobou Gold by Hawk MacKinney

Westobou Gold

by Hawk MacKinney

GENRE:  Mystery/Suspense

The Indian Queen would risk torture and worse to keep her secrets from these barbarians in suits of metal and their search for cities of gold. They never found the gold. Empires rose; empires fell, the centuries passed. Legend became fireside myths, but no treasure was ever found. Yet, among the grey-green drapes of wisteria and wild jasmine along the misty shrouded lowlands of bayous and marshes of the Westo River, the folktales persisted.

In the lazed creep of a near-tropical dawnlit the pungent Turkish coffee permeated Moccasin Hollow. Beyond the kitchen door Lucky, Craige Ingram’s German shepherd gnawed a favorite bone. Looted burial mounds seemed a world away until plundered mounds on Moccasin Hollow land brings amateur archeologist PI Craige Ingram into the crosshairs of kidnapping. Stealthy hideaways are concealed in old colonial brick-lined river grottos beneath the big house of Ardochy plantation. Sex-tape underage blackmail and thrill killings on federal land spur a medical examiner’s preliminary postmortem to more than a hired cleaner’s quickie cover-up passed off as drug deals gone sour. Greed tangles a witch’s pigswill of illicit affairs and murder-to-hide-murder. Shady investigators and shadier politics stir an unexpected concoction that threatens the lives of those at Moccasin Hollow in a spiteful plot against ex-SEAL Craige Ingram and the woman he loves.

Leeza picked one of her days off when Crawforde was out of town. She second-guessed herself as she thought how to go about it, and found herself making the turn onto the curved weeded Ardochy drive and parked next to the old granite buggy steps. She walked around to the front door and turned the ornate brass bell ringer; listened to its clang-ding echo. Waited. Nothing. She gave the brass knob another twist.

The door opened a crack, “Who’re you? What you want?” The door opened slightly more, “What you doin’ on this property? Radcliffe and Ardochy is closed for renovation. Won’t be open till restorations are complete.”

The gruff bushy-brows startled her. A bit of sweetness couldn’t hurt, “I wanted to visit Ardochy.”

“Both are private property. I asked you what you were doin’ here?”

“Are you the caretaker?”

“I don’t see that’s none of your business. Ain’t your place to ask questions. You’re on private property.”

“I’m doing a research paper for my history professor at the university in Columbia about the confederate battles near Aiken.”

“The Battle of Aiken?” The door opened wider.

“The McGiffern family and the name of Ardochy has come up several times. The university librarian told me most of the McGiffern papers were still in Redcliffe and Archochy.”

“Far as I know they’re all still on the shelves, but they’re book-wormed and full of silver fish. Pages are rotten. Fall to pieces in your hand. Ink faded, barely readable. I think the fellow handling the McGiffern properties is making arrangements to move them.”

“I’d be ever so grateful if you could show me. I know it’s imposing, but I won’t take long.”

Grumpy face disappeared; the door opened, “Only for a few minutes. I got things to do.”

Leeza gushed, “Thank you ever so much.” In the stifling afternoon humidity she felt a twinge uneasy as she followed him up the age-worn creak of solid wood stair steps that spoke of by-gone years. The long hallway talked to her, and she caught the slow steady tick-tock of a great clock somewhere.

“Library is right in here,” the caretaker ushered her in.

The moment she walked into the smaller room Leeza was bewildered, near to the point of being overwhelmed. Crawforde’s office had nothing like this. The narrow shelves were crammed with frayed folio volumes and stacks of handwritten papers and letters. “I expected this room to be bigger.”

He said, “This isn’t the main library. This room was Miss Theosia’s. Where she took her afternoon tea and sit and read.”

On the small desk with its rickety chair lay large leather-bound volumes, one trimmed in blue. Too big for her to hide and sneak out, “All these books and papers.”

“Still laying right where Miss Theosia last left them. Nothin’ fake about this place. Old man Virgil told me once when the landings flooded and the river got high, how he saw pottery and bones sticking out along the washed-out river banks. When the water went down Virgil went back and reburied the bones. Never told nobody what else he found. If he found anything he wouldn’t have told nobody. Folks talked about him. How Virgil was a dumb field hand. He wadn’t one bit dumb. Times when Redcliffe was a workin’ plantation and when the field bell rung after supper, I’d often see him sitting in that very chair with one of these books on his lap, readin’ away. He read every one of these books, sometimes more’n once.” Quick look at the shelves, “Some got wet during times they was hid in the tunnels and caves along the river ’twixt here and Savannah. Tunnels are older than Redcliffe. Indians likely lived in the first ones. McGiffern’s been hiding things in the tunnels since before this place was built.” With a wicked chuckle, “Early on it was corn squeezin’s bein’ shipped to Savannah Towne. Ain’t safe to go in them no more. All soggy when the river’s high. Timbers gone rotten. Most clogged with cave-ins. Lots of critters, turtles and snakes. Easy to get buried; no one’d ever know. Mud an’ river an’ rot can make a body disappear real quick if’n gators don’t take it first.”

“I’m terrified of snakes.”

He said, “Plenty of them about.”

Leeze recalled what her fifth grade teacher once said—how a book’s value comes from what’s inside. Leeza said, “One of my teachers knew about some of the tunnels.”

“She must’a been one of your old teachers.”

Leeza said, “Could I take just little look inside one or two of these? History of people’s lives right here in these pages.” Same as Crawforde had her do with his old volumes, she slipped on a pair of soft white cotton gloves, “I’ll be extra careful.”

The caretaker said, “A professor once looked through these books. He put on a pair of gloves exactly like that.”

“The professor I work for uses gloves when he’s handling his old volumes.”

“I’ll leave you be. When you’re done, I’ll be at the lower landing.” He shuffled out, Clomping down the creaking steps down one step at a time.

Leeza had used FIND and parts of the filename to locate the one she wanted with its small colored snapshot he’d taken. When she found the note, she printed a copy.

“Confirm El Escorial title printed in Madrid – check Ardochy library – name on the spine with embossed Coat of Arms – list of kings and queens, consorts and mistresses, madness and intrigues, courtiers, notables of each reign – Cortez, Portuguese Magellan – Fidalgo y Ranjel – Cutifachiqui – Westobou treasure – DeSoto –”

She turned to the endless shelves. Her eyes searched for the title with Madrid on the cover. Leeza had heard old-timers talk about Indians and their settlements along the Savannah. She reached a smaller volume down from the shelf. Several loose handwritten pages fell out. The flaky edges crumbled. Across the top of one page, “Westo tribes centered along upper Savanno River.” More faded words inked or penciled along the margins, across the top of the fragile sheets. “Traded mostly with Edisto and coastal tribes – bartered furs for sea treasures- ”

There were more words in cursive she couldn’t read or understand; more scribbles in English, but the faded ink was almost unreadable. “DeSoto kidnapped a Chief’s daughter – Chief died from the sickness the medicine man had never seen -” Underlined one word, “smallpox” Followed by, “ – fear for her people. Daughter gathered tribe’s sacred objects – hid them near the burial mounds of their forefathers.” She flipped through the folio pages for any other notes. Nothing shook loose until her fingers trailed the uneven bumps between the last folio page and heavy back cover, and found more notes between the original binding and the newer binding laid over the original. Leeza turned to the spine. She could just barely make out Madrid underneath the later cover.

She took out the pages she’d printed, and opened the book with the blue trim. The stylish handwriting scribed so many decades was long gone. She flipped through a few more pages, then eased closed the aged cover, and took the stairs back down.

Ah yes, the concoction of genre…which shelf in a bookstore or library…kind of book describes way mo’betta the ‘write’ of an adventure in cursive longhand or printer output bound between some sort of covers. Sci-fi and thrillers or romance or historical tales are the same. Readers identify with characters, the people-story emotions they can connect with. There is a misleading mantra afoot…“Write to the market.” That may be more than a few grains of marketing distortion for the beginning writer. It can distort and cripple one’s creative efforts down a very boring unfeeling path.

One should write what they enjoy. Roses are red, and violets are some other color is the extent of my poetry ability, but I’ve never found a poem that grabbed me that didn’t have a bit of gusto, tenderness, understanding…all those emotional ties that make writers persist into the long hours, alone in a room doing what they enjoy. Tales are about people.

My writings cross all manner of genre-stirring in my tales – science fiction with romance, a thriller mystery with romance. In a thriller boy-gets-girl, jealousy, boy-loses-girl, heartbreak and dreams reclaimed…tell me that’s not romance found in historical fiction AND sci-fi or the deciphering of macabre murder and mayhem. The beast of the ID is in all men. Without emotions to drive us, our words become dry logs in a dead journal. That wispy ghost of the tale shapes a droopy outline of boring behavior, objectives and single-spaced cardboard cutouts. Characters are in no way ever alive…the read of the book never finished.

My female characters are my favorites, and I make sure they never get away from being involved in how the screw turns. My serial protagonist in the Moccasin Hollow Mystery Series is yanked and puzzled all asunder by the delightful mysteries of the turn of an ankle or slope of a slender neck, a blazing glance of the eyes, the carriage of shoulders and upturned chin. The lusty inviting allure of strong thoughtful caring females who know what is right and possess the mystery of a wanton promise with the grace of a lady…no matter whether she’s hoeing corn or attending an opera. Protecting their children/family or tenderness with a significant other, it’s an innate poise and confidence-in-a-crisis these women most definitely have. I’ve been around strong women all my life. They are the greatest comfort in the world. Spoiling them when I can, but I prefer they spoil me. Those are the tales I tell…the books I write – I enjoy drawing these wonderful creatures with words. Genre doesn’t matter.

Agent Andrews suddenly became alert pulling Hannah from her book.
”Everything okay?”
”No, I hear a vehicle coming. There’s no way they’re done. Get in your room shut the door and lock it don’t open it for anyone but me.”
Hannah nodded as she went to her room. She saw Andrews flip the tv off and make his way to the window drawing his Glock simultaneously. Adrenaline coursed through her as she strained to listen to everything hoping to hear anything that might tell her what was going on.
After what seemed like forever of silence she thought she heard muffled voices coming from the window. She got on the other side of the bed and crouched down just in case.
The door slowly opened and Andrews came in and he held his finger to his mouth letting her know to stay silent then he flicked his fingers motioning for her to make her way to the bathroom. They both moved slowly and finally managed to get inside and the door closed.
”They’re going to take you. It was a set up the guys will get there and know so we can only hope they’ll be here soon. I’m outnumbered and out gunned I’m going to hold them off the best I can.”
