Summary from Goodreads:

“The summer I turned ten, my life took a fairy tale turn.”

So begins Reema Ben Ghazi’s tale set in Morocco, SHE’S LIKE A RAINBOW. Reema awakes one morning to find her skin has changed from whipped cream to dark chocolate. From then on, every few years she undergoes another metamorphosis, her color changing successively to red, yellow and ultimately brown. What is the cause of this strange condition and is there a cure? Does the legend of the White Buffalo have anything to do with it? As Reema struggles to find answers to these questions, she confronts the reactions of the people around her, including her strict and unsympathetic mother, Lalla Jamila; her timid younger sister, Zakia; and her two best friends, Batoul and Khalil. At the same time, she must deal with the trials of adolescence even as her friendship with Khalil turns to first love. One day, in her search for answers, Reema discovers a shocking secret – she may have been adopted at birth. As a result, Reema embarks on a quest to find her birth mother that takes her from twentieth-century Rabat to post-9/11 New York.

Reema’s humanity shines through her story, reminding us of all we have in common regardless of our particular cultural heritage. SHE’S LIKE A RAINBOW, which will appeal to Teens as well as Adults, raises intriguing questions about identity and ethnicity.

Excerpt:

From Chapter 4 – Patience

We were not very strict Muslims. We did not pray five times a day, nor did we go to Mosque every Friday (though we did attend on all the Aids or Holy Days, to celebrate the Sacrifice of Abraham, the end of Ramadan, and such). Zakia and I emulated Mother and did not cover our heads. As she got older, Mother took to praying and began to wear a head scarf whenever she went out, removing it at home, leaving it on in her shop. She did not insist that we begin wearing one however. Since Zakia and I went to the French Mission schools, we did not receive religious instruction as part of the regular curriculum like our cousins who went to Moroccan schools did. To fill this gap, Mother hired a tutor who came once a week to teach us the Koran and to supplement the mediocre Arabic lessons provided at school.

Mother had several copies of the Koran. There was one, wrapped in gift paper that she kept in her room. I had come upon the sealed package one day when I was about seven and, not knowing what was inside, I had torn the golden wrapping to have a peek. Afterward, when I’d asked Mother why she kept an old Koran that was falling apart, she had scolded me severely and boxed my ears. She told me that Father had brought the holy book back from the Haj and had carefully wrapped it in order to preserve it.

Needless to say, we did not use this book for our lessons. Instead, Haj Brahim (he was addressed as “Haj” because he, like Father, had made the pilgrimage to Mecca) would take down the large, heavy Koran from the top shelf in the book case and try to help us understand the verses. When this failed, he would settle for having us memorize them.

Not content to just recite the words without understanding their meaning, I had convinced Mother to buy a version that had the Arabic on the left side with the French translation on the right. This was the book that I used for my private prayers and to search for an explanation for my multiple transformations.

I was not having much success however and decided I must talk to Haj Brahim about it. I didn’t want to ask him in front of Zakia, so I would have to choose my moment carefully.

One afternoon, Haj Brahim showed up a little early for our lesson. Mother showed him into the sitting room and asked Naima to make some tea. Zakia was having a shower because she had participated in a race at school that day (that she’d lost, of course). Seizing the opportunity, I slipped into the room and gently closed the door.

Haj Brahim was a portly man, in his sixties and decidedly bald. He was an old acquaintance of Father’s who had helped Mother settle the inheritance after Father died. Mother was in a predicament as a widow with only daughters. In the absence of a male heir, Father’s three brothers had tried to wrest as much as they could, but Haj, who was an expert in Islamic law and connected to one of the Mosques in Rabat, had made sure that Mother’s rights, however limited, were protected. (Those rights would have been even more limited had Father not already taken several precautions while still alive, such as putting many of the deeds and wealth in Mother’s name.)

I cleared my throat and Haj, who sat leaning back on the sofa with his hands folded in his lap, looked over at me and smiled. As always, he wore a little white skull cap that he only removed now. I began hesitatingly to describe my problem. Haj must have been aware of my transformations as he’d been giving us lessons since I was nine and still “Reema, The Palest One of All.” He had never mentioned anything about my “condition” though. He listened carefully as I timidly described my tormenters at school, mother’s failure to sympathize, and my personal doubts as to God’s role in all this. I stopped abruptly when Naima brought the tea and placed the tray in front of me.

Using the knitted mitt, I grasped the silver teapot and poured some tea into one of the crystal glasses. Then, I poured the tea back in the pot and served us both. I glanced at the clock. Zakia would be coming in any minute and my chance would be lost. Haj nodded subtly, as if he understood my urgency, and went to get the Koran from the shelf. He put on his reading glasses, then took them off and wiped them with the cloth napkin that Naima had given him.

He paused before putting them on again and recited to me, “’Endure with patience, for your endurance is not without the help of God.’ God presents us all with different challenges, Reema. You must have patience and His wisdom will be revealed to you. All in good time.”

“But, why Haj? Why is God doing this? Making my skin change color all the time like I’m some kind of freak. What have I done wrong?”

Without answering, he opened the book to the very end and read me a verse:

            As time passes,

            Everyone suffers loss

            Except those who believe

            and do good deeds and urge one another to be true

            and to bear with courage the trials that befall them.

I could hear Zakia coming down the stairs. I quickly noted the page so that I could go back to it later.

Haj closed the book and said softly to me, “You are young, Reema. What seems like a great ‘trial’ today may not seem so terrible later on. You are a good girl. Just be brave – and patient.”

He patted me lightly on my hand. Somehow, it did not feel patronizing or dismissive. The butterfly touch of his fingers gave me hope.

BLURB:

Miranda Shane lives a quiet life among books and letters as a professor in a small upstate town. When the playing-by-the-rules poet throws out convention and begins to use a Scrabble board instead of paper to write, she sets off a chain of events that rattles her carefully planned world.

Her awakening propels her to take risks and seize chances she previously let slip by, including a game-changing offer from the man she let slip away. But when the revelation of an affair with a graduate student threatens the new life Miranda created, she is forced to decide between love or poetry.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“You sure you don’t want to take a cab?” Scott asked her.
“I’m sure. Then we wouldn’t see the diamonds,” Lynn said.
“Tiffany’s?” Miranda asked. “You’re a little young for that aren’t you? Though you are Bunny’s granddaughter.”
“Not like Grandma Bunny’s diamonds! The diamonds on the sidewalk. Look!”
Sure enough, the concrete in front of them sparkled. Four or five runs of sidewalk shimmered with mica flecks, then it went to plain for a block or two, then more that sparkled.
“I want to know what makes them different,” Miranda said to Scott, pointing at the abrupt change from sparkle to non-sparkle on the sidewalk in front of them.
“But knowing the difference would ruin it,” Scott said.
“You’d rather think it was magic?”
“I like the idea of magic. Don’t you?” he asked.
“I don’t take much stock in that,” Miranda said.
“Daddy, look!” Lynn said.
And there in front of them was a huge elephant balloon with a circus ball balancing on his trunk. The ball wasn’t all the way inflated yet; it wobbled a little and the sides of the elephant shuddered some as the helium pumped in. But an elephant as tall as a house at Central Park was a sight to behold no matter the size or amount of helium left to go.  The crowd around them seemed to holding their breath in anticipation as the ball slowly rose.
“See,” Miranda said, “to people watching on television that’s magic. But it’s not magic. It’s a year of planning and then people working all night on the day before a family holiday to pull it off.”
“But it’s magic to her,” Scott said.
Lynn strained at the barricade, craning her neck to see down the street and the rest of the balloons staged there.
“Sure, it’s magic to her. She’s a kid. Kids have to believe in magic. When you really grow up, it’s different.”
“I guess I’m not really grown up then,” Scott said. “And maybe I don’t want to be.”
BLURB:
Leanna Moonbody dreams of playing at the Saul Amphitheater. With just one adventure to fund her trip, she meets up with a priestess that dreams of a massive flock to take on a pilgrimage. Together, Leanna will set up the crowds, and Priestess Trixi will bring them to Our Lord.
With an elf, dwarf, rogue, pixie and a paladin on their side, they set out to realize both their dreams. They just have to maneuver past a lovesick noble, the clergy, a deranged halfling that can’t seem to die, and a plague.
What could possibly go wrong?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

“Ooh, this is exciting,” Leanna said with a smile, grabbing up Tear and Jonathan’s hands.

With the circle complete, Trixi looked to the ceiling.

“Lord. Oh, Lord, who is great and true. Take this offering of Form R226 and whatever leftovers we have here from dinner. Commune with me so that I may be a better Fawnspear, walking the path of truth. May it be really, really funny.”

With that, the scroll burned away before their eyes. Then, nothing. The silence became awkward.

“Did it not work?” Jonathan asked.

“Quiet,” Trixi demanded, turning her ear to the table.

The faint sound of terribly boring music filled the space all around the table. Any old ear would think it came from the building next door, but the trained ear of a Thistlite knew better. She listened to the song for a moment with her eyes closed.

Leanna joined in, leaning in to try and make out the tune. Suddenly, a loud voice spoke out, scaring her so bad she almost fell out of her chair.

“Our Lord is currently speaking with another faithful! You are very important to Our Lord! Your prayer shall be heard in the order it was received!”

Leanna broke the circle. “Oh, come on! Why did that have to be the loud part?”

“Leanna, you must be quiet,” Trixi whispered. “I’m sure he’ll be here soon.”

Guest post: Interview of Leanna Moonbody from The Singer and the Charlatan

We’ve just penned The Singer and the Charlatan, the tale of your first adventure with Priestess Trixi. People are saying it’s quite funny. Was the adventure fun for you?

I had the most fun when Priestess Trixi and Weevil were bickering. I love the drama of a good fight. The rest of the journey sounds like fun, but I think it’s funny if you’re pointing and laughing at all the horrible things that happened along the trip to Saul. I still get sick thinking about apples.

What about Lord Venegrass? He spent quite a bit of time chasing you around.

Ugh, that guy has zero personality. For an important rich guy, about the only thing he proved money could buy were nice dresses. Really nice dresses. Plus, you know, I accidentally made him insane.

Priestess Trixi’s religion isn’t very popular. What made you decide you’d team up with her?

It wasn’t a choice, really. She has her path to walk, and her path happens to like walking blindfolded people into trees to teach them a lesson or something. Who am I to judge?

What about Jonathan Twilight? He might be your protégé, but do I detect a hint of romance?

He hasn’t met any standards yet. He’s not very good with the guitar, and that cologne! Who carries cologne as one of their essentials when tracking through the wilderness?

Is it true you have no memories of your past? Why don’t you seem more interested in learning about it?

I don’t have any use for the past. It’s boring. The future can be anything I want it to be, and right now I’m happy being Leanna Moonbody. Could you imagine if someone told me my name was Jennifer or something horribly normal? Gods, no, I’m happy being me.

Well, this has been fun. Any idea what we can expect in the next book, The Princess and the Holy Juggernaut?

A lot of new dresses for me, Trixi starts getting her pilgrimage on the road, and I meet the most awesome cow there ever was! Oh, yeah, and people try to kill us with a giant Juggernaut.

The Adventures of Grant Scotland

by Dan McClure

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

mediakit_3dbook_boxed_collection_final

BLURB:

The Adventures of Grant Scotland series is an entertaining mix of fantasy, mystery and espionage featuring a hero whose many faults provide almost as much challenge to him as the formidable obstacles he must face as he attempts to impose sanity upon a world rapidly descending into chaos. Collected in this volume are the first three books in the series: Spy for a Dead Empire, Spy for a Troubled King and Spy for a Wayward Daughter.

Spy for a Dead Empire (Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book One)

AELFA, THE GRAND CAPITAL of the once mighty Aelfan Empire, has fallen. Barbarian war parties and nomadic tribes harass the retreating and broken legions that once overawed them. All that stands against them now is the city of Zyren, the last bastion of Aelfan rule.

Acting as a spy for Zyren is Grant Scotland, a man leading a double life because his own had been taken away from him by the very people he serves. An unwilling recruit into the business of clandestine missions and deceit, he searches for anything real to cling to as the world around him devolves into insanity. And when an old friend shows up asking him to help save his family by delivering a mysterious book to a shadowy figure, Grant’s two lives collide and he is thrust into an even stranger world than he had known; one where ancient magic is wielded by deadly players who compete against one another for a prize greater than simply the rotting carcass of a dead empire.

Spy for a Troubled King (Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Two)

AMONG THE ASHES of the mighty Aelfan Empire, the House of Gregyan seeks to forge a new kingdom—one where both Huthan and Aelfan alike can prosper. But old prejudices and ancient traditions and an exiled enemy threaten the peace. Caught between compassion for his home and allegiance to his fallen empire, Grant Scotland finds himself trapped in the turbulent machinations of enemies and friends. As he works to uncover mysteries about his father’s treachery and confront new threats to his future, he moves perilously close to revealing his identity and losing everything.

Spy for a Wayward Daughter (Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Three)

AS THE GREGYANS MARCH TO WAR and his handler takes a trip to Zyren, Grant Scotland, spy errant of the Aelfan Empire, gets ready to pursue a lead on finding a man who might be able to tell him the truth about his father’s treason. Old friends, new enemies and hidden dangers soon confront him on his quest, but when he enters the dark world of another family’s intrigue, he finds that not even the frontiers of the Aelfan Empire are far enough away to escape the dangers of fortune and fate.

Spy for a Greedy Villain (Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Four)

RACIAL TENSIONS IN AELFA simmer and threaten to boil over when the harbormaster is found dead and the Huthan oppressors threaten to crack down in the Lower Docks. As Grant Scotland finds more questions than answers in the journals of Berthul Magnussen about his father’s treachery, he is drawn into a murder investigation, a kidnapping plot and the nefarious machinations of the city’s biggest crime lord—Mr. Quinn. In order to stop Quinn’s plans and save the city from being thrown into open revolt, Grant prepares to take his biggest gamble yet.

Spy for a Wayward Daughter (Adventures of Grant Scotland, Book Three)

Her cool gray blue eyes studied me and I might have sucked in my gut, but I couldn’t be sure. I was too busy trying to remember how to form complete sentences.

“Good afternoon . . . Uh, I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage,” I finally managed to say.

“Marissa. Marissa Magnussen. Berthul is my husband.” Her voice matched her dress: smooth and inviting.

“Pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Magnussen.”

“Please, call me Marissa. Won’t you sit down?” She gestured at a nearby divan and I dutifully sat on it. “Would you like a drink?”

“I suppose I would. Yes.”

“I think Bertie has some Macforth Glyn here,” she said as she pushed away from the desk and walked across the room to a sideboard and began fixing drinks. The drink cabinet was on the opposite side of the room from where I was sitting and I was treated to a nice view of Marissa’s backside. The dress was backless, but Marissa’s body certainly wasn’t. I spent so much time contemplating how the curves that met at the base of her spine warranted closer inspection that she had to ask me twice if whiskey was acceptable. I think I answered yes, but I’m not sure in what language.

A smile briefly played across her lips as she brought the drinks over, handed me one and then sat next to me on the sofa. When she crossed her legs, I began to feel tense, but not in an altogether unpleasant way.

“So . . . Is Mr. Magnussen here?” My voice didn’t quaver at all. I was becoming a man at last.

Tobias Walcott, the Earl of Blade, has learned it is best to exercise rigid control over his passions and emotions in all that he does. Uncaring that it makes him seem cool and aloof to most in the ton, he is content with his desire to only woo agreeable and demur females. Then unforeseen circumstances see him trapped in a closet at a house party with the last woman he would ever make his countess.
Lady Olivia Sherwood is everything he should not desire in a female—unconventional, too decisive, and utterly without decorum. But passion ignites between them and they are discovered. Honor demands they wed, and while Tobias finds himself unwillingly drawn to the bewitching beauty, he must do everything not to tempt the passion that burns in him for her, lest it leads to disastrous consequences.

Excerpt:

PRIYAM SLAMMED HER BOOK against the classroom’s table, “That’s it. I freaking hate math.”

G highlighted some of the information from her notes. “You love math,” she said while continuing with the mundane task.

“Yeah, that was before I had to quit my life and study half a book for next week’s midterms.”

“You already know the book,” said G without looking away from her notes.

“Would you let me complain?!” Priyam moaned and stretched out. “It is Friday and we are stuck here in the library without food or water or love.”

G faced her antsy friend. “Would you rather study at the orphanage?”

Priyam snorted and placed her legs on top of the chair next to her. “There’s no such thing as study, or anything that requires concentration or quiet time, at the orphanage.”

“Then stop complaining and read.”

“You are no fun,” she said peeking at G’s notes. “Why… What are you doing? Mr. Blau explained this today.”

“I had problems understanding it the first time,” G lied since she had avoided the class completely. It’d been a week since her talk with Mr. Blau and it ended so awkward, she still had no idea how to face him. Unluckily for her, the school’s principal already talked to Miss Brown  concerned over her attendance so there was no way she could afford to skip more.

“Now that I think about it… you haven’t even been on his class lately. First it was a stomach ache, then a headache, then… wait…are you avoiding Mr-”

“Do you want food?!” G opted to distract Priyam before she could realize there was something odd about her behavior. “The cafeteria is still open. You can go there, get the food, and I’ll go to the machine downstairs to get some chips, since the cafeteria always runs out by this time.”

“Best decision ever!” Priyam took her purse, and they both left to their missions.

G went downstairs and bought half of the machine’s chips plus some candies. Her mind was clouded by Mr. Blau and many other questions she had. Why is he so damn difficult!

G had trouble speaking to any guy. They found her strange and didn’t know what to say to her. The first boy she liked refused to talk to her, he said no girl of twelve years old should have a tattoo. Try explaining to him that I don’t even know how I got it she thought as she caressed the circles on her wrist. When she was fourteen, her first date broke it off after seeing her helping a mistreated school plant to calm down. And at fifteen, her first kiss was interrupted when a dog attacked the principal’s son after he groped her more than she wanted.

Since then, G made an effort to avoid contact with guys. But this time was different. She wasn’t looking at Mr. Blau for romantic purposes, she just needed information. Is shouldn’t be this hard.

SNAP! A light bulb above her exploded. G gasped and dropped the snacks on the floor. Damn it… She bent down to pick them up but the place was too dark to find them. She took her phone out of her back pocket and turned its light on. Leaning closer to a package of cookies, her hand slipped on something warm and sticky. What the… G looked at her hand and found it was smudged with blood.

BLURB:

Who can resist a neighbor in need?
Nathan Forester doesn’t know the first thing about kids. So when the daughter he never knew existed arrives on his doorstep, he needs help, fast! His unlikely ally is next-door neighbor and single mother Cheryl Henshaw. Nathan and Cheryl don’t exactly see eye to eye, but neither can say no to a helping hand.
Renovating Fitzgerald House is Nathan’s chance to finally prove he’s no longer the unreliable twin—and it seems possible with Cheryl by his side. Suddenly their practical arrangement has become something much more. Trust isn’t easy, but they’re stronger when they work together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
It was nice having the craziness of feeding two kids and a man at her table. This is what life would have been like if Brad hadn’t died. Cheryl touched her stomach. Maybe they would have had another child.
She watched Nathan cut Isabella’s chicken. There wasn’t a second child in her future, but she could help Nathan with his daughter. Eventually, Nathan and Issy would move on, both physically and emotionally. But she could help for now.
“I cut the potatoes,” Josh told Isabella.
Issy forked a potato and smiled at him. A pixie with dandelion fluff for hair and her father’s heart-breaking brown eyes.
Cheryl brushed the hair out of Isabella’s eyes. “Is it good?”
The little girl nodded.
“I love it.” Nathan grinned.
Josh shot him a glare. And the bubble broke. They weren’t a family. She was just helping out a semiclueless father with a damaged daughter.
As dinner wound down, Isabella set her milk too close to the table’s edge and the plastic glass dropped to the floor.
“Issy.” Nathan’s voice was sharper than normal, but he didn’t yell.
The little girl cringed anyway. Her shoulders curled up to hid her face. A whimper erupted as she bent in two.
“It’s okay. It’s just spilled milk.” Cheryl hurried to the other side of the table. “Josh, can you please grab paper towels? We’ll have this cleaned up in no time.”
Isabella was frozen. Cheryl stroked her back and she jerked. “Nathan, I think she’s done.”
Nathan took the hint and picked up his daughter. She wrapped her limbs around him like a vine.
“It’s okay.” Josh handed a wad of towels to Cheryl. “Sometimes I spill, too. Mom never slaps me.”
“Slaps?” Nathan said. “Issy?”
The girl tucked her head deeper into Nathan’s shoulder, shaking her head. Josh covered his mouth.
“Josh?” Cheryl wiped the floor, trying to keep everything nonchalant. “Has Isabella talked to you?”
“I can’t tell.” Josh looked at Issy. “I promised.”
EXCERPT
He bends down so that his lips graze my ear. “Dance for me, baby. Right now.”
”Is that what you want?” I ask. “To watch me dance? Because I have something else in mind.”
His brow rises. “Do you?”
“Mmm,” I say, then start humming as I pull out my phone and find my current favorite song on my workout playlist. A little fast. A little raunchy. A lot fun. I click the button to send it through our sound system, and when the music starts, I press my hand to Damien’s chest and jauntily strut forward, forcing him backward to the padded bench that is intended as a place to sit and wait for the elevator. Right now, I have a different purpose in mind.
“I’ll dance,” I say, doing a shimmy and pulling off my T-shirt in the process. “I’ll even do a stripper dance,” I add. “But I don’t do solo shows. I require full participation.”
“Do you?”
“Absolutely,” I say, turning around so that my back is to him as I shake and shimmy in time with the music and very, very slowly ease my skirt off.
When I turn around, I’m dressed only in my bra and panties, and though I should feel silly, I don’t. Maybe it’s the alcohol. Maybe it’s the lingering high from fucking him in the limo. Maybe it’s the heated way that he’s watching my every move.
Maybe it’s the simple fact that I love my husband.
Whatever the reason, I’m enjoying showing off, turning him on and getting turned on in the process. And as I think that, I slide one hand over my bra and the other down my abdomen to cup myself over my panties.
I have my eyes closed, and the music’s loud, but I still hear Damien’s sharp intake of breath. I figure that’s as good a cue as any, and I open my eyes and strut toward him, then reach out a hand to pull him up.
He complies, amused, and I do my own version of a pole dance, with Damien playing the role of my pole. Up and down, stroking and teasing, shimmying and shaking. It’s a little erotic and a little silly, and by the time I have my bra off and am about to step out of my panties, I’m both desperately wet and giggling furiously.
I bend over to untangle my panties from around my ankle, and when I do, my giggles turn to squeals as Damien scoops me up and tosses me over his shoulder. I pound uselessly on his back, then cry out when he pitches me unceremoniously onto the bed.
“What are you–?”
“Shhh.” He puts his finger over his mouth, then strips off his own clothes. And though he doesn’t add any dance moves, I can’t deny that I enjoy the show.
Slowly, he eases onto the bed and straddles me. “I liked your dance,” he says. “I like even more that you did it because I told you I wanted it.”
“Anything you want,” I whisper, my voice throaty. “You know that.”
“I want you,” he says, then brushes a kiss over my lips. “
From “Money Eyes” a story in the “Obedience Training” collection:
Bad boys never change… Do they?
Cassandra Levant:
He was the best man at my best friend’s wedding and he had a hell of a reputation. Tall, handsome, full-of-himself, how could I resist? The cocky bad boy drew me in, and no amount of logic could convince me to let him go.
The first time we met, I didn’t exactly make a good first impression. Mistaking someone for a stripper doesn’t really land you in their good books, does it?
I mean, what are the chances that he arrives at the exact time the stripper is supposed to turn up? Give a girl a break!
Then again, what are the chances that three weeks later he’d end up being my hot new boss?
He thinks he has the edge over me. It’s about time this play boy was brought back down to Earth.
Aaron Maxfield:
After an embarrassing first meeting with Cassandra, payback was the only thing on my mind. I wanted her, and I knew she wouldn’t dare resist me, but first, I was going to thoroughly enjoy pushing all her buttons.
Funnily enough, it turns out that this stunning blonde is in need of a new job, and I happen to be hiring. Am I the luckiest guy alive or what?
I think I’ll make her my very own personal assistant. Let’s have some fun, shall we?
Read an excerpt from Rosalie’s story
“Oh! I’m so sorry! I wasn’t looking!” She immediately apologized before she even got a chance to see who it was that she’d jolted. It was the boy with the blue eyes! At first, she didn’t recognize him because he had on jeans without rips, and a plain t-shirt instead of a leather jacket. His face was freshly shaven, and she could still smell the sweet shaving gel he’d used.“It’s fine.” He kept staring at her, and she blushed. Turning back towards the front of the aisle that she’d come from, she decided that she was just going to grab a random box and get the hell out of there. “I think you might find this one to your liking.” He reached up and grabbed a box from the top shelf that she hadn’t even looked at yet, and held it out to her. Rosalie’s hand shot out of its own accord to take the box and put it in her little shopping basket.
“Thank you. And thank you for bringing back my book. I hadn’t even realized that I’d forgotten it.” Oh no! The word vomit had come out. She’d meant to say two words to him, then beat a hasty retreat, but her mouth had a mind of his own. He smiled at her, and she froze. His smile was utterly dazzling. It was like a moth being reeled in to the flame. She had to tell herself not to move any closer to him.
“It’s no problem. Enjoy your coffee.” He turned away from her, and it took her a second to realize that he was stocking the shelves. Did he work there? Something told her to just turn around and leave, but there went her mouth again.
“I’m Rosalie, by the way.” She blushed furiously.”
Mist
by Emily Mims
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Romance/romantic suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MediaKit_BookCover_Mist.jpg
BLURB:
The widow of a lying drug dealer, dulcimer-player Kylie Barstow Richards finds herself struggling to see through the mist of the Smoky Mountains to the truth-about her life, about the nightclub where she works, and about the bluegrass-playing musician who has arrived to steal her heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Kylie looked Ren in the eye.  “How much of that is the truth and how much of it was bullshit?”

Ren’s lips firmed.  “It’s the truth, every damned bit of it.  And that’s also why I did what I did.  The DEA honestly thought you were guilty.  A drug dealer took out one of my best friends, Kylie.  I’ve missed Jerry every day for the last two years.”

“And that justifies what you did to me?  Sorry, Ren.  Not buying it.  And I don’t care what your reasons for lying were, a liar is a liar.  And I can’t stand liars.”

“I get that, Kylie.  Look, obviously we blew it, and I’m just as sorry as I can be that I hurt you.”

“If you can be believed, which I seriously doubt.”

“I do mean it.  I’m sorry.  I’m really sorry.”

“I am, too, Ren.  I was just beginning to have a little bit of faith and trust again and you very effectively managed to take that away from me.  Congratulations.  I will probably never trust another man as long as I live.”

“Aw, Kylie, no.”  Ren leaned forward.  “Look, I know there is no way I can take back the lies I’ve already told.  But I can promise you this.  I will never, ever lie to you again about anything.”

Kylie shrugged.  “And now I’m supposed to believe that?  Ren, I’m sorry.  The damage is done.  The trust is broken.  Kind of like Humpty Dumpty.”

“I understand.  But Kylie, I’m going to tell you the truth from now on whether you believe me or not.”

“Knock yourself out.”

Emily Mims: Why I Write the Novels I Do

            The question is sometimes put to me.  ‘Why do you write the kind of books you do?’

When I think about it, I’m not sure there is one simple answer to that, because it’s not a simple question.  It could mean ‘Why do you write romance novels at all?’  It could mean ‘Why do you write contemporaries and not historicals?’  Or it could mean ‘Why do you throw in some suspense?’  ‘Why not paranormals?’  And so on.  So when I go to answer the question, I find that I am actually answering more than one.

            Why romance in the first place?  Because I love romance novels!  I started my writing career on a dare, after I pitched a poorly written romance novel across the floor and said I could do a better job and my husband dared me to.  But there is nothing more heart-warming or satisfying than a well-written  love story, with a hero and heroine you can love, engaging secondary characters who may get their own happily ever after somewhere down the line, some spicy sparks flying between our hero and heroine, enough problems to make their romantic journey an interesting one, and the warm and inevitable happily ever after that these two have earned.  In answer to the dare, I wrote the kind of book I want to read…and I’ve written twenty-nine more besides that one, every one of them the kind of story I enjoy.

            Now for the more specific questions.  While I deeply admire any writer that can bring the past to life, I write contemporaries because there is no way I can identify with women of a bygone era, even the ones who kicked aside the restrictions imposed upon them by the times.  I simply cannot imagine living in a time when a woman’s role was so narrowly defined by society, or successfully bringing a woman from the past to life in the pages of my book.  Nor do I read many historicals, unless the author is particularly skilled or funny.  They frustrate me too much!  Having to have a chaperone to protect your virtue?  I don’t think so!  The two exceptions to this would be historicals set in the American west with gun-toting, ass-kicking women standing shoulder to shoulder with their heroes, and the paranormal historicals with our characters nibbling their way through the ton.  I love those!

            So why do I throw in some suspense?  I don’t always.  Most of my earlier novels, the ones I wrote for Candlelight Ecstasy back in the 1980’s, were straight contemporary romances.  But when I revived my writing career for Boroughs, the some of my books were much longer than my old Candlelights, and I felt it made a better story to have an element of suspense in the longer ones.  (The shorter ones, such as my Christmas books, are straight love stories.)  The suspense factor is an external conflict that plays on the internal conflict between the characters and in many plots, such as the one in ‘Mist’, provides the situation that throws our hero and heroine together.  Plus, it’s just plain fun for the reader.  Paranormals are great fun too, and someday I hope to tackle that challenge.

            One more factor, a very important one, plays a big part in the kind of books I write.  Inevitably, my own life shows up in my books-where I’ve been, what I’ve done, what I know.  My first series for Boroughs, the Texas Hill Country series, was set in ‘Heaven’s Point’, a light fictionalization of the lake community where we have a second home, and the characters are a rich blend of pure imagination and a little clever tweaking of some of the people in my life.  In the Smoky Blue series, I am mining the wonderful world of mountain music that is an important part of my life.  I play the same dulcimer and the same songs that Kylie does.  I play the same ukulele that Leilani does in her story.  I’ve played in the jams and been to every one of the festivals I’ve depicted in the books, and talked to countless folk musicians about their lives.  And I’ve spent a lot of time in Appalachia and gotten to know the wonderful people of that region on countless trips to see my grandchildren.

            So in a nutshell, I write for you the kind of story I want to read.
