Whiteout

The moment you get all you ever wanted…

Pro-snowboarder, Reef Reid, has it all, except the one thing he desperately wants: the girl, the white picket fence and the happily ever after. At the peak of his career, he turns his back on the upcoming season and flies to a tropical island paradise to defrost.

At least that’s where he was supposed to go; a ticketing mishap has him landing in Queenstown, New Zealand, famous for its idyllic ski resorts.

Stratford ‘Ford’ Wallace understands attraction to the opposite sex. He’s a true playboy at heart after all; a genuine love ‘em and leave ‘em type. But all that is flipped on its head when the enigmatic Reef Reid literally drops out of the sky.

When a whiteout traps them together on a mountaintop, neither expects the explosive attraction that sparks between them. They’re unable to resist each other, but will they give into temptation? Or will the avalanche that tears through the mountain end them?

White Noise

Everything he didn’t know he wanted, and now couldn’t live without…

Paramedic and mountain rescuer Stratford ‘Ford’ Wallace fell hard and fast for pro-snowboarder, Reef Reid. For a ‘straight’ guy, falling in love with a dude was not what he expected, but his explosive attraction to Reef is undeniable. Neither of them have uttered those three little words yet, but Ford knows Reef feels the same. At least, he thinks he does.

Reef is smashing his pre-season training at Fernie, the idyllic Canadian snow resort, getting wicked air and landing what could be season-winning jumps. What’s even better is that his man is with him. Going home to Ford every night is what Reef always dreamed of— his very own happily ever after.

Knowing they’re ready, they take the next step in their relationship— meeting the parents. But when tragedy strikes on the slopes, can Ford push through the painful memories and be what Reef needs?

Ford will sacrifice himself, literally putting both his heart and his life on the line, to protect his man. But will it all be for nothing when Reef is presented with an offer that’s too good to refuse?

Author Bio

By day Ann Grech lives in the corporate world and can be found sitting behind a desk typing away at reports and papers or lecturing to a room full of students. With her quirky glasses and shiny leather briefcase, she has the librarian look nailed. All laced up tight in her pencil skirts and killer heels, her students can only fantasise about what she gets up to in her spare time. If only they could see those tattoos! Oh, and those notepads of story ideas tucked away in odd places that would be sure to have them fanning themselves!

By night she’s a wife and mum and a purveyor of saucy stories that are filled with lust, raunchy scenes and ultimately love. Ann’s an avid reader of anything sexy and firmly believes in the motto ‘leave mummy alone, she’s reading or writing.’ Because of that, she is pretty hopeless when it comes to getting dinner on the table on time or cleaning the house.

Tales of Yosemite

by Jonathan Williams

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Fiction
Tales of Yosemite - Ebook.jpg
BLURB:
A land of vast beauty and constant change, Yosemite National Park never ceases to amaze and inspire its visitors. And fiction writer Jonathan Williams, an avid camper and fan, is no exception. In four charming short stories, he captures the Park’s diverse landscape and unique wilderness, using it as backdrop in all its glory to tell his tales.
“The Condor Suit” tells the story of Tim whose life-long dreams of flying prompts him to move to a small town in the foothills of the Sierra to pursue his quest: building a bird suit and flying into the Park. In “Dog Lake,” a young boy on a Yosemite camping trip falls into the lake and disappears, only to discover another world lurking beneath its surface, and the lake magically comes to life. “The Rescue” tells the story of a hiker, and the unusual relationship he forms with a bear and her cub in the park. And with “The Old Man in the Sierra,” visitors in Yosemite National Park encounter a strange man leaving them wondering if he is the Park’s notorious mystery man? Does he exist, or is he the stuff of everyone’s imagination, and simply part legend, part ghost?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPTS:

Condor Suit:
“Tim was about twenty four miles into the flight and passing the main Park entrance when he noticed something strange.  His vision became clearer, and things became brighter.”
Dog Lake:
“Nathan found himself in a large empty room surrounded by water.  He carefully touched one of the glass walls, and his fingerprints smeared.”

The Rescue:
“Instinctively, I made as much noise as possible, and blew my whistle but the mountain lion continued toward me.”

The Old Man and the Sierra:
“The Old Man stood drenched, his outback hat offering little protection. His eyes closed, he faced the gales, the rain striking his weathered face, and he opened his mouth to the downpour.”

EXCERPT:

We were in the doorway now.  A large desk was at the far end of what appeared to be an office.  The light was coming from a small lamp perched on the edge of the desk, and as we crossed the threshold, it flickered and then went out.  Kat shone the pencil thin beam of the flashlight around the room, letting out a sharp cry as it hit the wall nearest us.  “Lightswitch,” she squealed, and a minute later the room was filled with a harsh fluorescent light.

I glanced around.  Yes, this was definitely an office, and not a very tidy one at that.  There were several file cabinets pushed up against the far wall, and two of the drawers in the one on the left were half open. Papers were strewn across the desk, and some file folders had dropped onto the floor and were scattered across the Oriental rug.

“Good Lord,” my sister exclaimed.  “For someone always so fastidious about his appearance, he certainly likes to work in a mess.”

I frowned.  “It looks more to me like it’s been ransacked. Someone was searching for something. What do you think, Kat? Kat?”

My sister had moved over to the far corner of the room and was standing before a large wardrobe.  “Wow, this is beautiful,” she said, lifting a hand to run it over the smooth exterior. She balled her hand into a fist and rapped it against the wood. “Solid oak.  I saw a picture of one like this in a catalog.  French, dates back to the late 1800’s.  I wonder what it’s doing in his office?”

“Who knows? Maybe he keeps his suit jackets in it,” I said.  “Why do you care, anyway?”

“It’s such a beautiful piece,” my sister murmured. “Too good for that rotter. It seems out of place in this office.”

“Maybe it just came in and he’s got it here for pricing,” I ventured.

“Maybe.  I wouldn’t mind having something like this,” Kat said, running her hand once again across the smooth wood.  “It looks deep enough – I wonder if the doors swing out all the way? It would be great to put a TV in.”

I eyed the piece. “That thing looks hand-carved. He probably wants an arm and a leg for it.”

“Probably.” She gave the handle a tug. “Hm.  The doors seem to be stuck.”

I waved  my hand impatiently.  “Oh for goodness sakes, leave it alone. Must you examine it now?”

Her lower lip thrust forward. “Yes.  Who knows, I might not get another chance.”

I shot her a sharp look.  “You’re not thinking of buying this, are you?”

She sighed deeply. “I suppose not.  Littleton will probably want some astronomical figure for it.  But I might never get another opportunity to see such a finely made one up close.” She shot me an appealing look.  “Give me a hand, won’t you? You’re strong. Maybe if we both pull on the handle at the same time it’ll open.”

I knew my sister. Once Kat made up her mind about something she was like a pitbull with a bone. I knew when it was futile to argue with her. “Okay, fine. But if we get this open, one quick look and then we’re out of here.”

She nodded and I placed my hand on top of hers. “On the count of three, give it all you’ve got. One, two—three.”

We both tugged at the same time and suddenly the door flew open.  We went staggering backwards at the same time the body of Trowbridge Littleton, his eyes bulging almost out of their sockets, tongue lolling to the side, hit the floor at our feet.

BLURB:

CIA operatives Vicki Boyd and Dylan Maguire are back in the 6th book of the award-winning Black Swamp Mysteries Series. Vicki and Dylan journey to Ireland for their honeymoon and while they are there, they agree to pick up a package from a Russian spy containing plans for Russia’s latest stealth technology. But when the Russian decides to defect, they find themselves trying to get him safely out of the country. They also discover the Kremlin has uncovered their identities and now Vicki and Dylan flee across the island. With breathtaking descriptions of Ireland’s rugged coast and the Northern Lights, romance and suspense come together again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
The winds whistled and swirled in the frosty night like a chorus of apparitions dancing and bobbing, leaving soft whispers against Dylan’s ear, enticing, cajoling, flirtatious and deadly. Ah, but they could drive a man insane on a night like this, he thought, pulling his collar tighter about his ears. He wore an Irish tweed cap and still the winds licked at his hair like fingers running through it, soothing, insistent and treacherous.
The horse’s mane was grasped as well by the same invisible force, the long strands stretched as though they were being combed by an otherworldly creature that would not let go. They were nervous tonight and he imagined given their heads, they would turn about and leave the eerie foothills of the Blue Stack Mountains. He kept a firm hold on Dougal’s reigns as the horse snorted, the sound unnaturally shrill.
He could read a horse like he could read a man’s face, and tonight it didn’t bode well. Dougal’s ears were stiff and pitched forward, a sign of unease for sure, and every now and again they twitched and trembled as his haunches dipped low. Dylan peered through the shadows at the other horses, both as spirited as his; and yet their tails were clamped low, their voices constant.
In contrast, the men were hushed as they had been since leaving the manor house, the silence broken only intermittently as Jack announced a change in direction or a distant landmark for which he was aiming. Even then, his statements were terse as if he was reluctant to speak in the eerie terrain.
The ground beneath the horses’ hooves was uneven and unpredictable. As the night sky began to brighten with the first vestiges of the aurora borealis, he began to see why their progress had slowed since entering the mountain range; the horses had to pick their way around craggy rocks, the tall grasses obscuring whether the land was firm or soft until their hooves either landed on solid ground or they felt the disconcerting descent into boggy earth.
He inched the horse forward until it was nearly even with Jack. He rode a silver mare with a jet black mane and tail, a beautiful animal to be sure and under the stars her coat was mesmerizing as if it was aglow.
“Are you certain this is the way to Innisbarracar?” Dylan asked.
Jack glanced in Alexei’s direction before shifting his attention to Dylan. “You said you needed weapons, did you not?”
“Aye.”
“Then we’d be taking a bit of a diversion.” He pointed at the mountain’s highest peak.
“Innisbarracar would be on the other side through the pass. We’ll be headin’ in that direction—” he pointed slightly to the left of the mountain “—where we’ll be arming ourselves first.”
“Ah.”
They rode for a few minutes in silence before Dylan asked, “And what type of weapons would you be havin’ there?”
Jack looked at him out of the corner of his eye. “Whatever kind you’d be needin’.”
GUEST POST
P.M. TERRELL: BOOKS THAT INSPIRED MY WRITING
The types of books that I write today are directly related to books that have made a lifelong impression on me. The first of these was Deborah and the Many Faces of Love by Collette Davenat. I always disliked the title because it didn’t convey the feeling of mounting suspense. It takes place during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I as Mary Queen of Scots was fighting for the crown and Deborah finds herself moving between the two as a spy for both women. This book was the first to get me interested in historical fiction and weaving romance with suspense, politics and intrigue.
I read What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson straight through in one sitting and was so intrigued by it that when I reached the final page, I turned back to the first and reread it, analyzing a style of writing that kept me turning the pages. Because of this book, I learned how to write suspense so that the reader has difficulty putting the book down. It begins with an accident in which a man’s life is cut short. Deeply in love with his wife, he is unable to completely let go of their life together even as he is pulled into the afterlife.
 In Cold Blood by Truman Capote cemented my love for suspense. It was said at the time this book was released that he had created an entirely new genre of telling a nonfiction story as though it was fictional suspense. It was the true story of the Clutter family whose bodies were found on their rural farm near Holcomb, Kansas and the unraveling of the two men who savagely murdered them.
The common thread with each of these books is the impression that something big is going to happen on the very next page. I hope through the pages of my books that I accomplish the same thing.
Which books were you unable to put down?
Book blast & giveaway – The Make It Happen Blueprint by Michelle McCullough
The Make It Happen Blueprint
Despite living in a world of abundance, many people still feel unhappy, over scheduled, tired, and unsuccessful. Yet there seems to be an group of people who “get it.” They catch all the breaks, accomplish more in a day, make more money in their business ventures, bounce back from trials faster, and always have their lives in order. Are they just lucky, or is there some sort of secret most of us are missing?
Michelle McCullough has spent thousands of hours studying, listening to, and learning from success experts including Stephen Covey, Jack Canfield, Brendon Burchard, Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy, Ken Blanchard, Darren Hardy, and more. Applying key principles (and learning a few things on her own) she’s built three successful businesses and while still maintaining a meaningful personal life. Everyone has the ability to be a high performer. All it takes is the right mindset, the right tools, and a willingness to work. As she shares eighteen practices for high performance, you too can learn how to take your business and personal life to the next level. Success is possible, happiness is achievable, so stop dreaming about it and get out and MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Excerpts – From The Make It Happen Blueprint
-Success is not a destination, it’s a practice. The actions we take every day, week, and month to make our dreams a reality are what determine our success and happiness.
-The most paralyzing thought keeping you from your goals is, “I don’t deserve it.”
– “Plan” is the four- letter word for success. Peak performers know this, and they find power in a plan and thrive on the execution and ultimate success of seeing it through to completion.
-Trying to do two things at once is a recipe for failure. The time has come for you to give up your “Multitasker of the Year” award.
-High performers don’t just understand the value of a person—they understand the value of every person.
– If you’re going for a gold medal in raising high performers (and I hope you are), daily ask kids this powerful question, “What did you do to make someone else happy today?” This helps them become more aware of others.
Praise for the Book
“I do love this book. McCullough is real and relate-able. I was only in the first chapter when I felt hopeful and empowered. While some of her golden advice is aimed mostly to those working in the field of Business (which I am not), there is more than enough real-life help that a Homemaker can use too. She doesn’t create, yet another, list of things “I should be doing”, but attainable solutions to MAKE TIME for the other things I really DO need to do. These recommendations are easy to do. I am so thankful for McCullough’s inspiration and passion to share this knowledge; my life was immediately changed and improved for the goals her book motivated.” – Kristin Call; London, ENGLAND
“Michelle McCullough has one of those minds you love to be around! She shares fresh ideas, content, and strategies for creating a life and a business that you love. Reading this book will elevate your life!” – Tiffany Peterson, Professional Speaker, www.TiffanySpeaks.com; Utah, USA
“The beauty of Michelle’s book & writing is that it is a lucid, unadorned reminder that we periodically need. It reinforces powerful practices which we often brush past and only remember when we fail to “make it happen”. I love her earnest voice and really personal examples.” – Vilasi Venkatachalam; INDIA
“As entrepreneurs we often feel alone. McCullough’s book Make It Happen reminds us that we are all in this together. She manages to rekindle your purpose as well as provide pertinent ideas and strategies to help you preform at your best. I love the way she provides a section at the end of each chapter to help you implement the things you read and learn in Make It Happen. Every purposeful entrepreneur should have this book on their nightstand!” – Nicole Carpenter, CEO of MOMentity.com and bestselling author of 52 Weeks to Fortify Your Family: 5-minute messages; Utah USA
The Legend of Queen Agatha
by Sam Cunningham
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   erotic fantasy/political allegory

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Front Cover_The_Legend_of_Queen_Agatha.jpg
BLURB:
In the mythical, medieval land of Xana, Queen Julia ruled as a typical aristocratic monarch in a country whose great wealth was concentrated among the privileged few.  Her  daughter, Princess Agatha, was the champion of the commoners.  The evil sorcerer Magi comes to Xana to kill Queen Julia and ravage aristocrats and commoners alike.  Princess Agatha alone is spared, for she is protected by her fairy godmother.  Now the beautiful heiress has two challenges, first to rid Xana of Magi and then to lift all the commoners from poverty into prosperity.  To achieve her first goal she must identify her handsome prince incognito in the crowd on her first try.  She won’t have a second chance.  To achieve her second she must invent and use radical political schemes even if not all her people approve.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

 Elias was an important member of the Queen Agatha’s council of advisers, perhaps second in the whole country behind the queen.  The queen caught him embezzling royal funds.

Elias was shaken to his very core by Queen Agatha’s response.  He expected a reprimand and perhaps a mild fine, but instead, she brought him before a huge crowd assembled below the palace balcony and publicly humiliated him.  She proclaimed, “Twice you came to me, not to serve our people but to enrich yourself.  You will apologize and give back to the people everything you have as atonement and compensation.”

Elias cried out to the people of Xana.  “I have done wrong.  I have taken that which I did not earn.  I am sorry.  I will return it all to you.  I promise never again to violate my queen’s trust.”

“You will give everything you have to the people,” announced Agatha.  “You will give all your land, your property, your possessions, and even your clothes.  You will keep only the clothes you are now wearing.  Everything you have will be sold at auction.  I shall use the money to find more teachers.  They will teach arithmetic to all the people of Xana so that they understand contracts.  No one can shortchange them again as you have done.”

“Everything but the clothes I am wearing?” whimpered Elias.

“Everything,” responded Queen Agatha, as Elias was led away, crying.  “You leave in disgrace.  May you one day regain your honor with service, humility, frugality, and generosity to your people.”  Agatha repeated, “And generosity.”

All the wealth that he had accumulated in a lifetime disappeared in a flash.

GUEST POST

Book Lover Promo Blog asks the author:  Why do you write the kinds of books that you do?

Sam Answers:  I’ll answer your question for the book that I am promoting, “The Legend of Queen Agatha.”  I like to read science fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy.  Being very much my own person and doing my own thing rather than following the crowd, I thought, why not mix historical fiction and fantasy?  Combine two genres?  How about creating a fantasy setting with culture and technology of the middle ages as a background?  Add ingredients, a strong woman who is gentle and kind with honorable people but doesn’t put up with bad behavior and stops it real fast, some radical politics that places the welfare of the commoners ahead of the fabulously wealthy, and then have the gall to claim that what worked for Queen Agatha in her fantasy medieval setting could work in our real world of the 21st century.  I invite you, dear reader, to decide whether to accept or reject my outrageous claim.

Sam Cunningham is a small college physics teacher.  He knows from personal experience with his pupils that through nurturing nearly all young people can become productive citizens.  It is an overwhelming tragedy that so many poor children are not given this nurturing.  Their personal loss, and the loss to their country of their productive ability, is a catastrophe.  As a scientist he understands that critical thinking and the ability to follow where the evidence leads are the only reliable ways to understand the real world.  Away from work he leaves the real world of hard evidence to read science fiction and fantasy.  His favorite childhood movie was the Walt Disney 1950 cartoon of Cinderella, and he greatly admires strong women.  Sam brings together all of these ingredients in this story of a princess who becomes a wise and inspired queen with a personal mission to achieve productivity, prosperity, and happiness for all of her people.

Excerpts

Kezra

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

I am no looker.

I’m not a dog either. But I am no looker.

Aylin used to say I was precocious. “Precocious when it comes to boys,” she’d say.

By the time I was done dating Conor, I said I was nothing but a fool.

I started dating too early. Antoni was the first guy I ever saw. I was fourteen, close to fifteen, sporting braces on my teeth. We shared a kiss, nothing passionate, innocent.

Until he touched my breasts and I went cold.

Fourteen. Was he a freaking idiot?

Dawson happened after that. It lasted three months. I was more grown up, more developed. My breasts, especially, were more developed.

I hate my breasts.

But it was Conor who would thrust me into the black world of adulthood with an indignant slap I am certain I will never forget.

I write because I am lonely.

I write because I hurt.

I write while tears drip from my eyes, turning the screen of my tablet into splotches of pixelated rainbows.

The way I was brought into this world has nothing to do with how I feel about love.

It has everything to do with how I feel about myself.

How much horror can a mind endure?

Are the pains of a sixteen-year-old laughed at by those older then her?

What pain did my mother suffer? (“Sometimes I went without food so that I wouldn’t have to take that bastard’s money, Kez.”)

My pain is nothing compared to what hers must have been. And yet, the pain I feel is phenomenal.

Tiago

P.S. I Love You (2007)

Just before the sun rises, when the world is silent and the River Tejo laps gently at the stone steps leading to the giant Praça do ComĂ©rcio square, leaves of golden sunlight shimmer above the surface of Lisbon’s great river. This is my favorite time to sit on these steps, flicking stones into the water, letting my gaze drift west toward the ocean.

And I think of her.

I do not weep anymore. My eyes are dry. I have wept this entire river twice over and still that will not bring her back.

The seagulls taunt me, cawing in accusation. I should have moved faster, they say. I should not have been so complacent with my joy.

I never deserved that joy. I know it.

Tiago

Deadly is the Female (1950)

It is the week for meeting Americans. And if I thought my encounter with Dahlia went bad, then I can only compare my meeting with the one called Kezra to something just short of a nuclear war. It’s my fault, mostly. But it’s also her fault.

I would love to say that our first encounter is quaint and sweet, that it is the type of first-meeting you expect from a Rom-Com.

It is not.

It is a disaster.

And I am nothing short of a hungover bastard.

But let’s call a spade a spade. Guilt must be placed where guilt belongs. And this chick is a real stinker of a piece of work too.

I guess you could say I started it.

I did.

But she contributes gladly to the atomic chain reaction which follows.

Dare I say, I think she even revels in it.

BLURB:

The Octopus isn’t an urban myth—and its agents are anything but ordinary. The intelligence bureau is so well-hidden most doubt its existence. A handful know its location. And fewer walk the halls in the subterranean compound.

Benjamin Sinclair didn’t ask to be a scientific miracle but every mission has its risks and one perfectly-placed bullet ended his life—for a brief moment in time.

Nicole Anima battles demons every day. Life as a paranormal resources operative gives her tortured mind a rest—and keeps her from contemplating her own death.

When Anima and Sinclair partner on a globe-trotting race to eliminate the threat about to cripple humanity, all hell breaks loose. Leaping from planes, crashing into continents, dealing with voodoo priestesses, and running through jungles with zombies hot on their trail doesn’t leave much time for romance, but this duo somehow manages to sizzle.

Two agents. Telepathic mind paired with regenerated commando. One world—and a mission to save it.

EXCERPT:

She opened one eye when she felt him staring at her. He leaned on an elbow, droplets of water caught in the curls on his chest.

“Hey.” He made the word a caress.

“Hey yourself. How was your shower?”

Pulling the pillow beneath his cheek, he dropped his face level with hers. “Lonely.”

Common sense told her to roll over. Show him her back. Go to sleep. She knew him well enough to know he would never consider forcing himself on her. But common sense and lust—for that’s all it could be, she reasoned inside her tired head—were two different things.

She swallowed.

“Listen…” A stab at heeding her conscience. “We can’t…I can’t…it’s—shit.”

He chuckled.

His amusement kindled her desire. To see him in such an intimate setting, so relaxed and open…it was erotic as hell.

“You do have a way with words, sweet cheeks.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“You haven’t protested before. I’ve used the endearment several times, if I recall.”

She watched his mouth, mesmerized by the way his lips formed words.

“I—ah, we were busy. So I let it slide. But don’t—you can’t…”

When he moved closer, all thought left her head. She inhaled deeply, pulling the scent of him into her.

He’s not human. Her mind tried to warn her but she ignored it.

GUEST POST

Top Ten List: Things That Make Me Happy by Sarita Leone

We all think we’re pretty easily satisfied, don’t we? Living simply, without too much fuss? I mean, no one wants to believe they’re high maintenance yet some of us are! As I’m compiling this list, I’m really hoping I fall into the non-high maintenance, living simply, easily satisfied category…

  1. Absolutely the number one item on my list is my family. I’m very grateful for being part of such an amazing family and they really bring joy and laughter to almost any situation.
  2. Yoga makes me happy. I’ve been practicing for years (longer than I’m going to admit!) and my daily time on the mat starts and ends my days with a smile.
  3. Books. Most authors are voracious readers, and I’m no exception. I love to read, love to be swept into a story, and definitely love to see the world through someone else’s eyes.
  4. I’m happy when I’m outdoors. Hiking, snowshoeing, swimming at the beach—they all give me peace.
  5. Pizza. Enough said.
  6. Writing. I’m so fortunate to be able to do what I love. My latest book, REGENERATE, gave me the opportunity to write a paranormal romantic thriller, something I’ve always wanted to do so this one really makes me over-the-moon happy. A new-to-me genre? Yeah, I’m smiling.
  7. I love to travel. Those who know me joke that I can grab my passport, pack a suitcase, and head to the airport in less time than it takes to peel an apple. The truth is, I enjoy meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. I like to explore ancient cities and hike glaciers. I’ve even walked on the Great Wall of China—and that made me wildly happy!
  8. Languages. I get a kick out of learning a new language or hearing conversation in foreign languages. I speak a couple of languages with varying degrees of fluency. Before I go to a country I try to get at least a basic grasp on the language spoken there. Communication is important—and people are genuinely happy if you’re able to exchange even minimal conversation with them. Plus, it never hurts to be able to locate a bathroom or pizza joint!
  9. I paint and draw terribly but joyfully so I smile when I take out my pencils and begin to sketch.
  10. Most writers are die-hard people Give me a park bench or corner in a cocktail party where I can witness human interaction, and I’m happy. People are amazing—in both good and not-so-good ways—and even if I’m not surprised by the range of human behavior, I’m often entertained by it. I don’t watch television, but I do watch people!

Exclusive Excerpt:

CRYSTAL FLEW THROUGH Truman and Gemma’s front door like wildfire, eating up everything in her path. Her raven mane was soaking wet, framing her beautiful, scowling face as she stormed into the living room. Her black hoodie hung open over a Rolling Stones T-shirt, and her piercing baby blues threw daggers. Her skintight black jeans had tears along her thighs and beneath her knees, revealing flashes of her tanned skin. Skin he’d like to touch and taste and have wrapped around him.

She stopped a few feet from Bear and set her hand on her hip. “Give me a paintbrush, or a roller, or a goddamn gun for all I care. Just give me something and get out of my way.”

They’d finished painting ten minutes ago. Bear chuckled at her vehemence. She was sexy as sin no matter what mood she was in, but this tigress before him made him want to comfort her and fuck her at once.

“Hard night, sugar?”

She narrowed her eyes. “Not hard enough. And I’m not your sugar. I need to work out my frustrations.” She thrust out a hand, obviously waiting for a paintbrush.

He grabbed that delicate little hand and hauled her against him. His entire body flamed. Several months of playing cat and mouse was way too long. Her eyes darkened and her breathing shallowed. Bear was done messing around. This brazen beauty not only wanted him, but she needed him. She just didn’t know it yet.

“What do you think you’re doing?” She spoke in a low voice and probably meant it to sound threatening, but she sounded sultry and hard to resist.

He cupped her chin, brushing his thumb over her lower lip, and the air rushed from her lungs. His hand slid over her hip. She had the sleek, sexy curves of a ’61 Harley-Davidson Duo-Glide, and he couldn’t wait to rev her up and make her purr. “Giving you what you need. A wild Whiskey night is the perfect remedy for your frustrations.”

“Uncle Be-ah!” Three-year-old Kennedy ran into the room wearing a Dora the Explorer nightgown and clutching the Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed toy Bear’s younger sister, Dixie, had given her. She squeezed between them. Truman had rescued his younger siblings, Kennedy and Lincoln, from a crack house after their mother overdosed. He and Gemma were raising them as their own.

Crystal smirked at Bear and arched a brow.

He reluctantly released her. Cockblocked by a three-year-old.

“Hi, pretty girl.” Crystal gave Bear a snarky look as she crouched and hugged Kennedy. “This cuteness is all I need after a frustrating evening.”

“Why are you fwustrated, Auntie Cwystal?” Kennedy still had a hard time pronouncing r’s, and the way she spoke turned Bear’s insides to mush.

“I’m not anymore, thanks to you.”

“I came to kiss you and Beah good night.” She gave Crystal a tight hug and kiss, then reached her spindly arms up to Bear and went up on her toes.

He lifted her up, and she wound her arms around his neck.

“Thank you for letting me help you paint.” Kennedy yawned and rested her head on his shoulder. “The house will be pwetty for Mommy and Tooman’s—I mean Daddy’s—wedding.” Although Kennedy and Lincoln were Truman’s siblings, when Lincoln had begun talking, he’d called Truman Dada, and Kennedy had said she wanted to call him that, too. Sometimes she forgot and called him Tooman.

Bear ran his hand down her back. It was hard to believe it had been less than a year since Truman had found them. Kennedy had gone from a rail-thin, frightened little girl to a healthy, happy member of not just Truman’s family, but Bear’s, too.

“You’re the best painter around, sweetheart. Thank you for helping me.” He lifted his eyes, catching Crystal watching him with a warm—interested?—look in her eyes. He liked that a whole lot.

Crystal’s eyes skittered away. “Hey, Ken? Where’s Mommy?”

“She’s giving Lincoln a baf.”

Crystal smiled. “Want me to take you up to bed?”

“Yes,” Bear and Kennedy said at once.

Crystal rolled her eyes at Bear and reached for Kennedy.

Bear put an arm around Crystal’s waist, ignoring her glare. “I’m escorting two of my favorite girls upstairs. Deal with it.” He guided her toward the stairs, where they ran into Truman on his way down.

Truman stood eye to eye with Bear, his dark eyes moving between the two of them. His lips curved up and he shook his head. He must have read the annoyed expression on Crystal’s face, because he reached for Kennedy. “I think I’ll intervene. Thanks, guys.”

After he went upstairs, Crystal said, “You can let go of me now.”

“No thanks.” He kept ahold of her as she stalked back to the living room. “Want to tell me what happened tonight?”

“No. I want to paint.” She squirmed out of his grip and he tugged her back.

“If you think I’ll let this go, you’re wrong. Talk to me. What’s got you so irritated?”

“Jesus, Bear,” she snapped. “I’m not yours. You don’t have to protect me.”

He ignored her comment because she knew damn well how things worked with the Whiskeys. More importantly, she knew him well enough to know he’d never sit idly by and let her get hurt. If someone had pissed her off, he’d straighten them out.

“You’re not mine yet,” he conceded.

“God, you’re so arrogant and handsy and…Ugh!” She pushed away. “I just had a rough visit with my mom, that’s all.”

“What happened?” Her not wanting to go into specifics didn’t surprise him. She’d always been cagey about her parents.

She grabbed the ladder and dragged it toward the far wall. He took it from her, and she glared at him again. She was the most stubborn woman he’d ever known. She was also sharp, confident, and possibly the most sensitive person he knew, though she’d never admit to it. Those were just a few of the things he found utterly entrancing about her.

Her arms were crossed, and he was pretty sure if it were possible she’d have steam coming out of her ears. “Can we just paint?”

“Sorry, sugar, but we’re done for the night.”

“Seriously?” She looked around the room, and her stomach growled. Her lips curved up at the edges as she spread a hand over her belly.

Perfect. He whipped out his phone, texting Tru and telling him he was taking Crystal out for a bite to eat. “Grab your bag. We’re going out to eat.” He draped his arm over her shoulder and headed for the front door.

“I’m not hungry.”

He gave her his best deadpan stare.

Challenge rose in her beautiful eyes. “You don’t tell me what to do.”

“All right. Your stomach’s growling. Obviously you’re hungry. Let’s go grab something to eat.”

She folded her arms over her chest. “That’s telling.”

“Christ, woman.” She had no idea how much he adored this side of her. They’d never been on an official date, but they’d gone to grab a bite to eat spur-of-the-moment like this plenty of times. “Are you hungry?”

“I could eat.”

“Great,” he said. “Let’s go.”

“Oh my God. Really? Didn’t anyone ever teach you how to ask a woman if she’d like to go out to eat?”

“Are you telling me to ask you out on a date?” He slid his arm around her waist again and waggled his brows.

“No.” She laughed.

He loved her laugh. It was brazen and loud, like her. “Damn. Thought I got lucky. Crystal Moon, would you like to grab a burger with me?”

She picked up her bag from the floor. “Fine. But I need to tell Gemma. You’re so bossy.”

“You totally dig bossy, and I already texted Tru and told him.”

“Presumptive and bossy.”

The Good Spy Dies Twice

by Mark Hosack

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

TGSDT - HOSACK.jpg

BLURB:

“The Good Spy Dies Twice,” the cryptic final words from a condemned death row inmate draw Jake Boxer, the one-time king of cable news, out of retirement, setting him on a collision course with a deadly global conspiracy involving his secretive wife, a depraved New World Order, and the “guests” at a posh Alaskan ski resort. Everyone is a suspect. Part spy thriller, part whodunit, “The Good Spy Dies Twice” is the first book in Mark Hosack’s explosive new thriller series, Bullseye. Called “an undeniably spry and rousing espionage tale” by Kirkus Reviews.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Panting (he was an audio guy, not an athlete), Brody reached the fence. He put a hand on it and felt his arm spasm uncontrollably in one long, sustained, hot pulse.
The same type of electric shock that had knocked him off the second fence was once again rushing through his fingers and into his arm. He crumpled to the ground with a new, yet familiar, scream on his lips. Luckily, he fell backward, and the weight of his body jerked his hand away from the fence, breaking the electrical current.
Lying in the snow, his arm shook violently for several seconds, and Jesus, his heart—it was skipping beats like a rock skimming a lake. He looked back at the fence. It was just fifteen feet high, and slouching in parts where the support poles were bent, or in some cases missing. It was old, a relic of a bygone era. Totally unassuming.
Or so he’d thought.
Somehow, there was now electricity coursing through it, electricity that hadn’t been there when he’d first scaled it, just minutes earlier.
Someone had turned on the juice, and that meant someone was watching him.
When he first parked his car, he’d counted two fences from the road.
Two fences between him and the rumored Soviet installation.
No problem, he’d thought. The fences were falling apart—he could easily climb them. But now here he was, stuck in between them. Like a rat in a cage.
With his stomach in his throat, Brody cradled the audio recorder.
Okay, so he’d recorded a sound that just might change the world, but as several headlights appeared in the road just beyond the now-electrified fence, as dark silhouettes of bulky Russian men poured out of the cars and hurried through the snow toward him, he found himself asking a much more personal question:
Was it also a sound worth dying for?
Moist, pink lips, full and sweet. Lips he yearned to kiss. “Matilda Rose, be careful or you’ll bewitch me,” Cooper warned.
She laughed, a light lilting laugh, as if he’d said something terribly amusing.
As they danced slowly, silently, the tantalizing movements of her body pressed to his, propelled Coop’s heart into an irregular rhythm. The smoky simmer of desire curled through his core, shot to his fingertips. Like some demented soul, he continued to torture himself with a woman he could not have.
When the music ended, his lips grazed the top of her head, stealing a taste of her sweet, silky hair.
Matilda Rose stepped back, her lips parted in a dazzling smile, her eyes sparkling as they met his. She had no idea how he felt, how much he wanted her.
During this time I met many inspiring women who shared their stories with me, women whose remarkable achievements, great spirits and strength influenced my work as I started to write. First, I became a published poet. It didn’t take much time for me to write short verses.
As with most writers, I wrote my first historical novels in the evenings after my day job. A second wind is required to do this and it magically appears with the passion for writing.
Passion for the writing and persistence in submitting are the keys to becoming a published author.  The secrets of the sisterhood gleaned from lessons learned along the way.
Not long after being published I discovered that a writer’s life is not all about the voices in your head demanding release to a page – frequently at an inopportune time. And it’s not all about three figure contracts, champagne tours and as much chocolate as you can consume. Oh. No. A writer’s life includes thundering deadlines, dry spells, assorted blocks, carpel tunnel syndrome and frozen shoulders. Occasionally, the green-eyed monster rears her head and wraps grown women in knots. But most of all, writing romance is a wonderful love story in itself. There is nothing else a romance writer would rather be doing. She is totally in love with romance and with the ability to share her stories with gracious readers. Thank you, dear reader.
The NY Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of Whatever Life Throws at You kicks off a brand-new series perfect for fans of Miranda Kennealy and Abbi Glines.
All is fair in love and hockey…
Claire O’Connor is back in Juniper Falls, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be. One semester off, that’s what she promised herself. Just long enough to take care of her father and keep the family business—a hockey bar beside the ice rink—afloat. After that, she’s getting the hell out. Again.
Enter Tate Tanley. What happened between them the night before she left town resurfaces the second they lay eyes on each other. But the guy she remembers has been replaced by a total hottie. When Tate is unexpectedly called in to take over for the hockey team’s star goalie, suddenly he’s in the spotlight and on his way to becoming just another egotistical varsity hockey player. And Claire’s sworn off Juniper Falls hockey players for good.
It’s the absolute worst time to fall in love.
For Tate and Claire, hockey isn’t just a game. And they both might not survive a body check to the heart.
5 Things I Wish I Knew About Being an Author before Becoming an Author
  1. Fighting to keep all 120,000 of draft 1 and winning, might not actually be a win.
A 120,000 word book means editing 120,000 over and over. Unlike Dickens’, most authors aren’t paid by the word so yeah, short book FTW.
  1. I wish I knew how to write a short book.
If I had known how hard it would be to get through all the phases of draft 1 to publication, I would have convinced my earlier writer self that more than 70,000 words means the ending gets cut off or some other crazy lie. The shortest book I’ve written thus far is around 90,000 words (about the length of the first Hunger Games book). I’ve tried to write shorter, I swear I have but no luck. I have YA author friends whose books are sometimes 60,000 or 70,000 words and I stare with envy each time I see those titles on a shelf with their thin little spines.
  1. Practice signing books early.
I have a bookshelf filled with copies of my books that I attempted to sign and messed up the person’s name, and on a couple occasions my own name. Signing books is way harder than it looks.
  1. Practice Patience
The publishing industry, though it can appear fast-moving to the outside world, often runs at snail pace. I remember years ago when waiting a week for something felt slow. Now months go by after sending in a draft and it will feel like a week. Other times I’m back to my early writer self, preoccupied with impending piece of news.
  1. You will never please every reader no matter how hard you work.
It’s so easy to forget that I don’t like every book I read so why would I expect others to? But emotion sometimes clouds logic when a new author sends their first book out into the world.
Drummer Micah Sullivan lost his music and his dreams when his wife died unexpectedly. In the emotional aftermath, he quit his successful country band and pushed away his family and friends. Three years later, he’s opened a music shop on Hale Street in Nashville and tells himself he’s content trying to make it a hit. What he failed to consider is that success requires connections—including the very ones he turned his back on.
Sloan McGuire is up for a new challenge…never realizing it might lead to heartbreak. When she takes a job as entertainment manager at a bar not known for its music, she doesn’t bargain for running into Micah, whose late wife was her best friend. She can tell within minutes that he’s still grieving. Out of love for her friend, she attempts to reconnect with the reclusive drummer. Falling for him isn’t in the plans, though—not only because he was married to her friend but because she’s been second-best before, and she never wants to play that role again.
As Micah starts finding his rhythm, life throws him a different beat. But with a little improvisation and a lot of courage, he just might tap into the one and only connection he needs.
“It’s not every night a girl gets an offer to spend time with the world-famous Micah Sullivan and his family.”
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that.” His heart hammered in his chest and lust pounded through his veins as he breathed in her scent, a light, floral something that made him feel more alive than he’d felt in forever.
“Oh, sorry,” she said, her lids lowering halfway and her voice going quieter, more private as he slid his hands to each side of her tiny waist. “I forgot you prefer Just Micah.”
He couldn’t answer, wasn’t even sure what she’d said, because his gaze had homed in on her plump bottom lip, where there was still the hint of a sheen from her lip gloss, and he suddenly wanted more than anything to taste her.
He dipped his head down and touched his lips to hers, only intending a quick taste, but when he felt her arms go around his neck and sampled the sweetness — chocolate and a faint hint of strawberries — he couldn’t have backed off if someone held him at gunpoint. He swept his tongue over her lower lip, teased the seam, and when she pressed the tip of her tongue to his and they swirled together, he couldn’t hold back the rumble that came up from his throat.
“You’re too tall,” Sloan said, pulling away only enough to get that out before she pressed her lips to his again.
“You’re too short,” he managed, not recognizing his own voice. He braced his hands on the backs of her upper thighs and lifted her so that their mouths lined up perfectly, then took a couple steps so her back was to the wall as he sealed his mouth to hers again, angling his head for better access. Sloan’s legs wrapped around him, and he was suddenly so hot it felt like the house was on fire.
“Hey!”
She heard his voice before she saw him.
Had she known the ultimate cost of that simple glance heavenward, maybe she wouldn’t have stopped. Maybe she would have just kept on walking with her head down. But fate held no warnings for Laire Maiden Cornish.
Shielding her eyes, she looked up at a deck wrapped around the second floor of the mansion, waiting a moment for her eyes to adjust as he came into view.
There, in the glittering sunlight . . . a boy.
No, a man.
A young man, a little older than she, tall and muscular, with jet-black hair and a square jaw, dark brown eyes, and a deep tan. He wore a robin’s-egg blue bathing suit with Kelly green palm fronds in a small repeat and a pair of sunglasses buried in his thick hair. In one hand, he held a phone up to his ear, and in the other, he slowly swirled a glass filled with ice and clear liquid. He stared out at the sound, concentrating on his call.
“Hey!” he yelled. “Can you hear me now?” He huffed with annoyance, pulling the phone away from his ear and squinting at it before trying again. “Pete? It’s Erik. Can you hear me?” He set the glass down on the balcony’s wooden railing and gave his phone his full attention. Staring down at it, he muttered, “Shit. No reception.”
It’s Erik.
Erik.
His name is Erik.
Feeling a sharp burn in her lungs, Laire realized she’d been holding her breath and sucked in a huge gulp of air as she stared up at him, frozen in the moment, utterly mesmerized.
She had never seen a more perfect, more handsome person in her entire life.
The sun glinted off his dark hair and wrapped his body in gold, making him appear godlike so very far above her. Were she the type to swoon, Laire imagined she would have been a puddle of goopy longing on the ground below him, content to sacrifice her pride for a glimpse at his beauty.
BLURB:
Aileen is a bilingual music student with a chronic case of poverty. She gets a dream job as an interpreter for a boy band making a movie in Japan. Having spent her life as a sheltered, shy only child in the rarefied world of classical piano, she is utterly unprepared for this new world, these boys and their frank physicality and openness. Theo, especially, the known playboy and unrepentant flirt of the group, makes her uncomfortable in a way she’s never felt before, and ultimately Aileen, or Tinker Bell, as she’s known to the boys, has to decide if she’s ready to leave the sidelines and become a participant in her own life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

“No, don’t do that, little one, not yet.”

“I fell, right?” I asked. “Teddy came in, he was drunk, he said—he said some things, you got mad at him—” I looked up at Gethin, “Matty hit him, then I ran over to them and tripped and hit my head on the edge of the table.”

“What?” Matty exploded. “Tinker Bell, Theo hit you! He was aiming for me, I mean, I assume he was aiming for me—” this with another glare at Teddy, “but he took a swing as he was going down and he hit you in the face, bloodied your fucking nose!”

“Dammit, Matthew, of course I was aiming for you!” Teddy shouted. “Why would I want to hit her? You’d just clocked me in the face! She just got in between us at the wrong moment, and I was going down at the time, that’s why I swung so low! Don’t you think I’d cut my own arm off before I’d hit her?”

“Actually, I think he hit me in the jaw,” I said, again reaching for my face. “Could you take a look?” Geth leaned in, turning my head gently so he could see.

“Jesus Christ, she has a cut, just under her ear, along her jawline, a pretty deep one, too,” he said, horrified. “Guess we didn’t notice it with all the blood from her nose, but this looks awful.” He turned and looked at Teddy, and his silence was worse than any words he could have spoken.

“What’s wrong with you?” asked Ronan tearfully to Teddy.

GUEST POST

Interview with the characters

We always hear about how awful touring is, how grueling. What’s the best thing?

Ronan: Probably being with the lads. Sounds so fake, but they’re really like me brothers. I only have tons of crazy sisters at home, so, yeah, being with the boys is great fun.

Gethin: I’d have to agree. All evidence to the contrary, life on the road can get lonely, and it’s nice to have that bond to fall back on.

What do you do during your “down time”? When you don’t have band related commitments?

Matthew: What’s that, then? (Laughter from the boys). No, seriously, I love to go back to Scotland and just see my family and friends, my granny. My parents and sister are doctors, they have very busy lives, and it’s nice to just be with them, away from the madness.

You guys are unusual in that, from the very beginning, you’ve written all your own music. Where do you get the inspiration for your songs?

Theo: You never know where inspiration will hit, honestly. Sometimes it’s something that’s happening in your life. Sometimes it’s something thats not happening, that you want to happen, or miss, you know? Like hoping you’ll meet someone special (teasing and laughter from other boys).

Well, I’m sure there are plenty of ladies who would love to make your acquaintance. Have you ever considered leaving the business? What would it take for you to actually quit this life?

(General hubbub from all the boys)

Theo: No, I can’t imagine doing anything else, if I’m honest. I feel like, other than being a husband and father (ribbing from the others), this is what I was meant to do. Of course, I’m not like Matty, for example, who’s so clever, and could’ve been anything (more laughter from the boys); like, his entire family is full of doctors, seriously! Or Geth, who could’ve inherited his family sheep farm, right, mate?

Ronan: I’d be a gamer. (laughter) What? I’m good at it! And our Geth would just be a guitar player for another band, he’s that good. (sounds of agreement)

So someone mentioned something earlier about meeting someone “special”; you’ve been asked this before, but what are you looking for in a girl? Or woman, I guess, since you’re all in your twenties now?

Matthew: Well, someone who’s smart would be nice. I don’t know how the other lads feel about this, but I love when I talk to a girl and she gets all my references right away, when I don’t have to explain everything?

Ronan: Yeah, Matty does like an intelligent woman, don’t you, bro? Unlike some others I won’t mention, who seem to go more for quantity than quality, maybe? (Theo punches Ronan in the arm, makes as if to leave)

Theo: You know, I used to know the answer to this. It was all the usual stuff; smart, like Matty said, funny, easy-going. Funny is really important, all that stuff is, but lately I’ve started to really think about this, and all I can think of is that I want someone who can fill in the spaces in my heart, you know? Like I’m not exactly sure what’s missing, but I’ll know when I meet her. (teasing from the other boys)

Gethin: What’re you saying, Theo? You looking for someone who’ll “complete you”?

Theo: Stop making fun of me, you wanker. (turns to interviewer) Geth is just a completely shallow and unsympathetic person, you have to realize.

As of the filing of this report, all boys are single, and preparing for their tour to Japan, where they’ll be filming a documentary about life on the road.

A second chance for romance…

Hidden in Graystone Manor is a book containing all the dark secrets of Harmony Harbor, and Ava DiRossi is determined to find it. No one-especially not her ex-husband, Griffin Gallagher-can ever discover what really tore her life apart all those years ago. With Griffin back in town, it’s more important than ever that she find the book before someone else does. Because her ex is still angry with her for leaving him. And he still has no idea Ava never stopped loving him…

Ava is no longer the vibrant, happy woman Griffin had once loved and married, and he would do anything to bring back the sparkle to her brilliant green eyes. But what’s never changed are the sexy sparks of attraction between Ava and Griffin, and he won’t give her up again without a fight. He knows there’s the real possibility of a future together… if the truth doesn’t burn the bridge between them forever.

TastyToursExcerpt.png

Turning the lever to hot, Griffin left the bathroom to retrieve a bar of soap from his kit. He stopped short at the sight of Ava walking across the room carrying an armful of wood.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Her mouth fell open, and she dropped the logs…onto her foot. “Crap. Ow. Crap,” she yelped, grabbing her foot and hopping around.

“Ava, let go of your foot. You’ll hurt your arm.”

She ignored him, swearing in Italian while still holding on to her foot with both hands.

He released an exasperated sigh. “Stubborn as ever,” he muttered as he walked toward her and scooped her into his arms. She might be as stubborn as she used to be, but she was at least thirty pounds lighter. When they were together, she’d been all soft, lush curves. She released a surprised gasp and her arms automatically went around his neck. Beneath the smell of damp wool, he caught a whiff of the same perfume she used to wear—Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue. It brought back memories of all the times he’d held her in his arms. Seven years of memories, most of them amazing.

He set her on the edge of the bed and cleared his throat. “Do you think your foot’s broken?”

She didn’t answer; she looked like she might be in shock. He crouched in front of her to remove her wet shoes. The old Ava wouldn’t have been caught dead wearing shoes like these. She loved heels, the higher the better. Sexy, strappy shoes that were colorful and blinged out. He never could figure out how she walked in them for hours on end without complaining. But damn, he’d loved watching her do it. He should probably be grateful her taste in footwear had changed too.

This pair though…“For Chrissakes, Ava, there’s a hole in the bottom of this shoe, and look at this.” He lifted the other shoe, flicking its flapping sole.

She made a small choking sound, her eyes huge in her flushed face.

He frowned. “What’s wrong with—”

“You…you’re naked.”

He scowled and rose to his feet. “It’s not like you haven’t seen it before,” he grumbled, stalking to the bathroom to retrieve a towel. She was gone by the time he came back.

Carrie Hansen spent her life caring for cardiac patients. Little did she know she would become a patient herself. After recovering from her own heart surgery, she learns she has a new skill: the ability to see and talk with the dead.

Now, with her health failing, she leaves the bustle of Seattle behind and returns to Lexington, Missouri, the small town where she spent her childhood. Here, she sets out to restore an abandoned antebellum mansion and open it as a venue for celebrations.

Carrie’s unique gift allows her to build relationships with the mansion’s ghostly occupants, especially Major Tom Gentry, the handsome Civil War soldier who died 100 years before Carrie was born. He encourages and comforts her, though not in the physical way they both desire.

Will Carrie finish restoring the celebration house or will it finish her? And how can she plan a future with a man who has only a past?

excerpt

Prologue

Carrie Hansen checked her watch a third time. She yawned and rubbed her eyes. How much longer was this office visit going to take? After working a twelve-hour night shift, she’d come straight here from the hospital. She wanted to go home.

Glancing around the small exam room, Carrie wondered what the name of the shade of beige paint was that covered the walls. Sit and Wait Off-white, she thought, or maybe, Calm-down Cream. She refused to sit on the exam table with its crinkly paper. She’d sat on enough crinkly paper, so she occupied one of the two office chairs in the corner and stared at a poster that listed the symptoms of congestive heart failure. Fatigue? Check. Shortness of breath? You betcha. Swollen legs and ankles? Yep again. Damn. She had almost all of those symptoms.

When Dr. Henry Lionel, her cardiologist, entered the small exam room, his nurse, Beth Kozera, came with him. Carrie knew both providers well. Beth sat in the chair next to her. Dr. Lionel pulled up the rolling stool he usually perched on during their frequent visits.

Carrie’s pulse quickened; they never both came in during an office visit.

Dr. Lionel took off his eyeglasses and cleaned them with his tie, stalling.

Carrie blurted, “It’s bad, isn’t it?”

Neither nurse nor doctor said anything for a minute. Dr. Lionel put his eyeglasses back on and sighed. “It is, Carrie. I can show you the images from the echocardiogram, but here’s what matters: your ejection fraction has dropped again. Now, we estimate it’s about twenty percent. It was sixty after the transplant. The symptoms you report – fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty lying flat – all point to one answer. Your new heart is failing.”

Carrie nodded. “I was afraid of that. What do we do now?”

“We contact the transplant team and work you up for another heart. At your age, you’re a strong candidate.”

“What’s Plan B?” Carrie interrupted.

“There isn’t one. We can adjust your medications, but it’s another transplant or…”

Carrie finished his sentence. “Or I die.”

Silence filled the small room.

“How long?” she asked.

He looked at her over his glasses and smiled. “C’mon, Carrie. You and I both have been asked that question time and time again by patients’ families. We both know there’s no answer. This is overwhelming news. Take some time. Talk to your parents.”

Carrie grimaced. “I lost my dad last year, just before I got sick. Now this. I’m not sure how much more news my mom and sister can take.”

“You need time to process this,” Beth said.

Carrie squeezed Beth’s hand. “Thank you. You’ve always been so kind to me. But maybe time is the one thing I don’t have.”

“We’ll start the process of getting you back on the transplant list today. I’ll call the surgeon myself,” Dr. Lionel said.

Carrie shook her head. “No. No. I won’t go through that again. I can’t. I’ve had enough of hospitals and doctors and surgery to last me – well, the rest of my life. No more.”

After she left the doctor’s office, Carrie returned to her small apartment. She shed her clothes and crawled into bed. Six hours later, when she awoke, she brewed a cup of tea and turned on her computer to comb through all the websites she’d already visited, looking for a kernel of good news. National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, CardioSmart, and WomenHeart. Nothing.

She opened one of her favorite pages, IHeartOldHouses.com. She loved looking at the historic properties for sale. She clicked on the listing for Missouri and saw a new advertisement. Four bedroom, one bath, Greek Revival. A “project” home.

Carrie chuckled and clicked on the property. She scrolled through the photos that showed a home clearly in disrepair. When she saw the façade of the house, she gasped.

“Oh my God! I know this house.”

Carrie mapped it. Yep. It was on the same road where her grandmother’s home had been. That house was gone now, lost to land developers who had bulldozed it and turned the rolling farmland into another subdivision. But this house… this house needed saving. And so did she.
